"Influence is not about climbing the corporate ladder; it's about climbing into the hearts of those around you. When you earn the right to be heard, you'll be amazed at the influence you can have from wherever you are."

7 lessons I have learnt from the book "How to Lead When You're Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority" by Clay Scroggins and Andy Stanley:

1. Cultivate Self-Leadership
The book emphasizes the importance of developing strong self-leadership skills, as this forms the foundation for effectively leading others. Scroggins explains that by mastering self-leadership, you can build credibility and influence, even when you lack formal authority.

2. Choose Positivity
The authors stress the power of choosing a positive mindset, even in challenging circumstances. They suggest that by maintaining a constructive and optimistic outlook, you can positively influence the energy and morale of your team.

3. Think Critically
The book encourages readers to develop critical thinking skills, which allow them to analyze problems, challenge assumptions, and make well-informed decisions. Scroggins explains that this ability to think critically can help you gain the trust and respect of those around you.

4. Reject Passivity
The authors caution against falling into a passive mindset, where you feel powerless to make a difference. Instead, they urge readers to take an active, proactive approach to leadership, leveraging their influence to drive positive change.,

5. Cultivate Influence Through Relationships
The book highlights the importance of building strong relationships and networks, as these connections can be leveraged to increase your influence, even without formal authority. Scroggins provides strategies for developing trust, rapport, and collaborative partnerships.,

6. Communicate Effectively
The authors emphasize the need for clear, compelling communication, as this can help you inspire and motivate others, even when you're not in a leadership position. They offer guidance on crafting persuasive messages and engaging your audience.

7. Embrace a Servant Leadership Mindset
The book encourages readers to adopt a servant leadership mindset, where the focus is on empowering and supporting others, rather than seeking personal gain. Scroggins explains that this approach can help you build trust, credibility, and a lasting positive impact, even without formal authority.

Clay Scroggins and Andy Stanley provide a practical and empowering framework for developing the skills and mindset needed to lead effectively, even when you're not in charge.

Look at the guy on the left. He’s got the lock, but he seems totally comfortable, maybe even complacent. He doesn’t care to change his situation. Then there’s the one in the middle, still locked but clearly frustrated. He knows something’s off, but he hasn’t figured out how to break free yet. He represents that moment in life where we know we need a shift but just can't seem to get there. Lastly, the third person has the key — knowledge. He’s opened his mind and is learning, growing, and changing. The book in his hands isn’t just a literal symbol of learning, it’s the pathway to unlocking potential.

This image reminds me of how easily we can fall into mental traps. Sometimes we’re too comfortable with our routines to seek growth, and other times we’re just stuck in frustration, not knowing how to break free. But the power to change is within us. We all have the potential to open our minds — to learn, to explore, to grow.

It’s not about being the smartest person in the room, it’s about being willing to learn. Growth doesn’t come from staying locked in the same mindset. It comes from curiosity, from questioning your own beliefs, and from opening your mind to new perspectives. So, if you ever feel like the guy with the lock on his head, remember: the key is right in front of you, and it's never too late to use it.

Shaquille O'Neal said, “My stepdad was a sergeant in the army—a serious, strong man of character. We had an excellent relationship.

I once played at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks in my first season in the NBA. I had a terrible game.

Afterward, he called me and asked why I played so badly. He wondered if it was the pressure of facing Patrick Ewing and the Knicks. I told him I felt pressure. He said, ‘Tomorrow, I want you home at 7:00 AM. Pick me up—we're going to see a family that has no home.’

On the way, we encountered a family in need. My stepdad stopped, gave them money for their next meal, and said, ‘That’s pressure. You have everything; you’re weak. There’s no pressure in playing basketball and earning millions of dollars. Real pressure is felt by those who don’t know when or where their next meal will come from.’ He told me to get out and help that family.

I got out and saw a man with his wife and two children who had just lost their home. The man was looking for work. He told me he was cutting grass. I called a friend and asked him to get this man a job. I called another friend and said I needed an apartment for a family of four, promising to send a check the next day. They needed help.

After that, I never felt pressure in a basketball game again because that family had real pressure.”

I have seen people that keep saying that others are switching up on you. I’ve seen it repeatedly over the years. So this is for anyone who keeps wavering in and out of sobriety.

You are the one that keeps going from sober to high, high to sober, sober to drunk, drunk to sober, sober to drunk, drunk to high, high to sober. Month in and month out it’s the same thing. You are the one always switching it up and deflecting it on everyone else because they react to your inconsistencies.

This isn’t to clown you out but maybe you should quit getting sober for the attention and maybe start doing the work it requires for you to quit switching up on everyone. Go into a meeting to learn, not for the people. Work a program so you can really change, not to get pats on the back for trying. Quit going back out for the pity party you get when you get clean again. You want attention? Completely and whole heartedly change right in front everyone’s eyes and you’ll get the right kind of attention.

The day you see that you are the problem is the day you might stay sober.
