Running a contracting business means managing a lot of moving parts at once.
Crews, schedules, materials, subcontractors, invoices, change orders โ and now everyone is telling you to add AI on top of it.
Here is the truth: AI can absolutely help a contracting business run more efficiently. But it will not fix a data problem. It will make it worse, faster.
If your client records are inconsistent, your job codes are a mess, and your team is tracking hours in three different places โ no tool is going to sort that out for you.
Before you invest in any new technology, get these five things right:
Consistent naming conventions across all clients, vendors, and job codes. No duplicate records. A single source of truth for job data. Validated intake fields so every crew member enters information the same way. And a regular habit of auditing your data before problems stack up.
That is the foundation. Build on it, and the tools actually work.
Get the foundation right first. Then let the tools do the heavy lifting.
