This kitchen is part of what made the whole house feel worth building.

We wanted something modern and design-forward, but still functional and full of personality. The grain matched walnut cabinetry brings the warmth. The polished concrete floors keep it grounded in honest materials. The geometric backsplash tile and bold color make it feel like more than just another builder grade/resale ready kitchen.

It’s not neutral for the sake of being safe.

It’s a statement kitchen designed for a home that was never meant to feel standard.

At the center of our home is the two-story great room, where the kitchen, dining, living, and bar areas all connect.

This space had to do a lot: everyday family life, meals around the table, hosting, quiet mornings, loud afternoons, and all the ordinary in-between moments that make up a home.

The sloped ceiling, clerestory windows, and wall of sliding glass doors bring in light and views of the trees, while walnut cabinetry, blue geometric tile, custom lighting, leather, marble, rugs, and sheer window treatments bring the space back to a more human scale.

That is the balance I care about most in modern residential design.

Architectural, but still warm and welcoming.

Beautiful, but still ready for real life.

The modern Lake Conroe home we couldn’t find, so we built it.

Ten years ago, my family was looking for something specific: more space, more natural light, a stronger connection to the land, and a modern architectural point of view that felt right for the way we actually wanted to live.

We could not find it on the market.

So I designed the floor plan, led the interior design direction, and we built a home that could support our family of six from the early baby years into the life we are living now.

This project is personal, but it also reflects so much of what I believe about good residential design.

A home should not feel assembled from disconnected decisions.

It should begin with a clear vision.

It should work for daily life.

It should reflect the people who live there, the land it sits on, and the future it needs to grow into.

I’m finally sharing the professional photography from our own modern home near Lake Conroe, along with the story behind why we built it.

I’m Amanda Croft, the interior designer behind Studio Croft Modern Homes & Signature Stays.

I’m a nationally certified, Texas Registered Interior Designer, a vacation rental owner, and an Airbnb Superhost.

Through Studio Croft, I design luxury modern homes and design-forward vacation rentals with a clear plan from concept to completion.

Studio Croft Modern Homes is focused on renovations, new construction, furnishings, and design master plans for homeowners who want a more intentional, elevated way to live.

Studio Croft Signature Stays is focused on vacation rental interior design for hosts who want their property to stand out, photograph beautifully, and command higher rates and fuller calendars through strong guest experiences.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more from a very personal project: my own modern home in Willis, Texas. It’s the home we couldn’t find on the real estate market, so we designed and built it from the ground up.

After ten years of designing, building, furnishing, living in, and refining this home for our family of six, we finally had it professionally photographed this spring. I’m excited to share more of the story behind it and the design decisions that shaped it!

One of the biggest issues I see in vacation rental listings?

Friction.

If a potential guest has to stop and figure out:
• Which bedroom is which
• How many bathrooms there actually are
• Whether the layout will work for their group

You’ve already slowed down the booking decision.

Some will ask questions.
Most will just move on.

And this isn’t just a listing problem.
It’s a vacation rental design and presentation problem.

The way a space is planned, furnished, and photographed should make the layout obvious, the function clear, and the experience easy to understand.

A strong vacation rental doesn’t just look good.
It makes it easy to say yes.

This is one of the most common gaps between a property with potential and one that actually gets booked.

Guests are not studying every vacation rental listing in detail.

They are scrolling quickly, comparing options, looking at photos, skimming the details, and reading the reviews to decide which property feels like the easiest “yes”.

For vacation rental owners, good design has to do more than look beautiful in the room. It has to help the property read clearly online through better photos, stronger first impressions, thoughtful layouts, elevated guest touchpoints, and a listing that feels complete, comfortable, and trustworthy.

That is where informed design decisions matter.

With a Signature Stays Edit, we look at your existing vacation rental through the lens of guest experience, market positioning, and return on investment. That can include reviewing your current listing, studying the local competition, identifying where the property may be underperforming, and making strategic updates that help the stay feel more distinctive, polished, and bookable.

What makes prospective guests say “I like that!”?

First impressions don’t take minutes, they take only a few seconds. Guests may not describe it this way, but they are paying attention to a few key things right away:

• Clear, well-lit photography that reflects the space honestly

• Furniture that feels cohesive and appropriately scaled

• Enough seating and dining space for the maximum number of guests

• A layout that supports how people actually gather, indoors and outdoors

• Bedrooms that feel comfortable and clearly presented

• Bathrooms and kitchens that feel clean, updated, and easy to understand

They are not analyzing these details one by one. But they are feeling them immediately.

A home can have a great exterior or a desirable location, but if the interiors feel generic, disconnected, or visually inconsistent, it becomes much harder for a guest to picture themselves staying there.

First impressions don’t take minutes.
They take seconds.

And in those few seconds, most guests have already decided whether to keep reading… or move on.

As an STR interior designer and a host, I saw this firsthand while booking a recent stay for my own family.

So many properties had real potential, but something in the presentation didn’t support the experience.

That gap is where bookings are won or lost.
