This is a merchant credit card processing statement.

Buried in the “Important Messages” section is notice of a $529 Annual System Enhancement Fee.

Here’s what concerns me.

Most business owners never read this section of their statement. They review deposits, glance at the fees, and move on.

That’s a mistake.

Whether you agree with this particular fee isn’t the point.

The point is that processors can change fees, update policies, and modify agreements—and those changes are often communicated in the fine print.

As a business owner, you don’t have to memorize every line of your merchant statement.

But you should never be surprised by what’s on it.

Take five minutes this month and read every page of your processing statement.

You may find something you weren’t expecting.
