Let’s dive into a magazine-style feature that brings your art to life for readers. I’ve selected three pieces from your portfolio that share a playful, whimsical spirit—each one featuring vibrant, anthropomorphic animals engaged in moments of connection, movement, and community. Here’s a quick look at the selected works:

---

---

What unites these pieces is a sense of joyful storytelling: animals are given human-like qualities, inviting viewers into a world where play, friendship, and imagination take center stage. The bold lines, saturated colors, and dynamic poses create a visual language that’s instantly recognizable and deeply inviting.

# # # Magazine Feature: Whimsy in Motion—The Playful Worlds of Deborah Willard

Step onto Trade Street in Winston-Salem’s Arts District, and you might catch a glimpse of Deborah Willard at work—her brush dancing across fabric or canvas, conjuring creatures that seem to leap straight from a child’s daydream. In her world, turtles don toboggans and skate across winter landscapes, iguanas stand upright to share a secret dance, and a red fish and green turtle meet in a burst of underwater color. Each piece is a celebration of whimsy, community, and the small joys that animate everyday life.

Willard’s art is instantly recognizable for its bold outlines and saturated hues, but it’s the sense of story that lingers. Her animals are never static; they’re caught mid-movement, mid-gesture, mid-laughter. The “Winter Sports Turtles” tumble and glide, their patchwork shells and striped hats echoing the patchwork of personalities in any close-knit community. The dancing iguanas, with their curling tails and expressive eyes, seem to share an inside joke, while the red fish and green turtle reach out to one another in a moment of playful connection. These are not just animals—they are characters, each with a role to play in Willard’s ongoing narrative of joy and togetherness.

There’s a deep sense of place in Willard’s work, rooted in the vibrant energy of the Arts District and the artist’s own commitment to community. Her pieces invite viewers to pause, smile, and remember the delight of seeing the world through a child’s eyes. Whether painted on a canvas, a dress, or a city sidewalk, her art is a gentle reminder that wonder is always close at hand—if only we’re willing to look.

In the end, it’s this spirit of connection—between creatures, between artist and viewer, between art and place—that makes Deborah Willard’s work so memorable. Each piece is a small act of celebration, a testament to the power of play and the enduring magic of imagination.

This story would appeal to readers who crave a sense of joy and authenticity in art—those who appreciate work that’s both skillful and deeply human. A feature like this can help grow your following by sharing the heart behind your creations, inviting new audiences to connect with your world.

Would you like to add a personal quote, details about your studio, or another element to deepen the feature? Let me know how you’d like to customize it!

Need to correct some details. 1st, I am no longer located on Trade St. I am not even in the Arts District anymore. I am part of a collective called CultureWS, located on the 9th floor of an office building called Liberty Plaza. It is in the center of downtown Winston-Salem, next door to the new Kaleideum Children's Museum, across from Mershel Park which sits between Third and Fourth Streets. The City of Arts and Innovation has grown dramatically since I returned in late 2004. The Arts have expanded beyond the confines of the Arts District, and I too have migrated to a new creative environment. I'll make that the subject of a future post.
