How I spent my Holy Week on Holy Friday in Mansalay…

This quiet municipality in Oriental Mindoro deeply observes penitensya every Holy Week. At the public market, many gathered to witness the senakulo the reenactment of Christ’s passion along with the crucifixion or pagpapako sa krus.

And it’s not only in Marinduque where the Moriones can be seen here too, faith takes many forms.

Along the road, we witnessed devotees performing “penitensya” cutting and whipping their backs with sharp blades until they bleed. This act, done year after year, is their panata a way of asking forgiveness for their sins.

It was painful to watch. At every station of the cross, they pause to wash their wounds, their backs marked by sacrifice and devotion.

But it made me reflect deeply…
I hope that asking for forgiveness is not only expressed through physical suffering or tradition, but also through practicing humanity in our daily lives.
Not only to carry the cross…
but to truly follow it and live by the words of the Lord.

A lot of my friends have been asking what happened to my page why my followers and likes dropped from 4,000+ to just 300.
The truth is, my page got disabled, and I had to start all over again from scratch. It wasn’t easy, especially after building it with so much time and passion.
But here’s the good part, despite everything, the page still brings inquiries and work. And for that, I am truly grateful.
Now, I’m choosing to begin again. I’m starting to write, to share stories, and to inspire people just like I always wanted to.
Because sometimes, losing something is just the beginning of a better story.

This Holy Week, I am choosing to pause and step away from the chaos of the world, the demands of work, and the weight of everyday worries. Together with tour operators, media bloggers, youth leaders, and my family, we take this time not just to travel—but to reflect, reconnect, and find peace.

Dito muna tayo… huwag munang umuwi.

One of the stops on my Mindoro Oriental circuit includes the Mangyan Indigenous People. The largest of the eight Mangyan tribes is the Hanunoo Mangyans. With the help of tourism office, I reached Sitio Galang, where I was welcomed warmly and grateful to learn about their rich culture, traditions, weaving arts, and livelihood.

Nanay Han Using, one of the oldest Hanunoo weavers, shared her craft with her 10-year-old daughter, who, like her mother, began learning the art at this age. The Hanunoo are known for their exquisite handicrafts, such as baskets (bayong and balulang), beadwork, and mats. Another remarkable aspect of their heritage is their ancient burial grounds, which reflect their deep connection to their ancestors and traditions.

Cucina Higala offers a rich array of Mindanaoan cuisine, with "Higala" meaning "Friend." Located in Cagayan de Oro, this restaurant stands out for its sumptuous dishes at reasonable prices, making it an ideal place to bring guests. Each dish tells a story that not only delights the palate but also nourishes the soul. The staff are warm and accommodating, adding to the overall pleasant experience. Without a doubt, I would give this restaurant a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5-star rating!
