Emflon® PFR Filters

Emflon® PFR PTFE sterilizing-grade membrane filter cartridges and capsules have been specifically developed as air filters with high strength and long life for nitrogen blanketing or compressed gas applications for stainless steel bioreactors, and filling operations where temperatures are under 60 °C.
The hydrophobic and chemically inert filter membranes meet the FDA requirements for microbial removal to qualify as a sterilizing grade filter. The membrane offers a removal rating of 0.2 µm in liquids and 0.003 µm in dry gases.

What is endotoxin?

-> Endotoxin is a toxic heat-stable lipopolysaccharide substance present in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria that is released from the cell upon lysis.
-> Also known as lipopolysaccharide or LPS
-> Gram-positive bacteria do not produce endotoxin since these bacteria do not have an outer cell membrane.

Chemical structure analysis revealed that an endotoxin unit consists of fat (known as lipid A) and carbohydrates (polysaccharides).
The lipid A portion of the endotoxin is the toxic component, while the O-Antigen is made of polysaccharides and is associated with immunogenicity

Asymmetric Membranes In Prefiltration And Fluid Clarification

Asymmetric filter membranes provide fast and consistent flow rates in applications such as prefiltration and clarification.

In contrast to traditional microporous grades, these membranes have larger pores on the upstream side of the membrane which acts as a pre-filter, capturing larger sized particulate while maintaining throughput and low pressure drop, whereas the absolute rated downstream side, or exclusion zone, acts as an absolute cut off layer.
The graded nature of asymmetry results in a sidedness to the membrane, requiring knowledge of the upstream side of the membrane for optimal performance in the application.
