Direct traffic in your Google Analytics reports got you down?
Here are some ways to understand the "why" behind the traffic that our lead analytics consultant uses to dive deeper behind Google's classic "I don't really know" bucket of traffic.
Really though, you may be panicking about the lack of insight into this traffic. However, marketers and business people are an adaptable bunch. You may not know everything about these people, but you still can:
☀️ Work towards capturing more first-party data. Delight, entice and give a damn-good reason for people to sign up to your newsletter or make an account.
☀️ You can still segment all sorts of ways with direct traffic - converters vs. non-converters, customers who viewed specific products, took an event-action. All of these can still give you insights into how to improve your site and user experience.
☀️ Get more insights using micro-feedback touchpoints. Ask customers what they want. And get another opportunity to show them who you are.
And remember, lamenting about direct traffic can be a symptom of data paralysis - an excuse not to do anything about the information you're finding. Instead of fixating too much on what you don't know, action what you do!
