Direct traffic in your Google Analytics reports got you down?

Here are some ways to understand the "why" behind the traffic that our lead analytics consultant uses to dive deeper behind Google's classic "I don't really know" bucket of traffic.

Really though, you may be panicking about the lack of insight into this traffic. However, marketers and business people are an adaptable bunch. You may not know everything about these people, but you still can:

☀️ Work towards capturing more first-party data. Delight, entice and give a damn-good reason for people to sign up to your newsletter or make an account.

☀️ You can still segment all sorts of ways with direct traffic - converters vs. non-converters, customers who viewed specific products, took an event-action. All of these can still give you insights into how to improve your site and user experience.

☀️ Get more insights using micro-feedback touchpoints. Ask customers what they want. And get another opportunity to show them who you are.

And remember, lamenting about direct traffic can be a symptom of data paralysis - an excuse not to do anything about the information you're finding. Instead of fixating too much on what you don't know, action what you do!

🎵 really gets the benefits of heatmapping tools. Why should you have one on top of Google Analytics?

It provides a visual way to understand what is happening on the page. You can watch user sessions
(everywhere they clicked, what they clicked on), and also see the overall trends for where users are clicking. Knowing this helps you create pages that are the correct length and add or remove buttons to shape traffic to where you want it to go - a lot of times you can quickly identify that users are clicking on something that isn’t your primary goal (like contact us instead of making a purchase or submitting a lead). Knowing this is the first step to placing that “contact us” somewhere better so that more visitors click on what you truly want them to 👈

It is a good idea to keep an eye on the ratio, especially comparing your transactions to a financial system back-end - but be careful how much time ❗

There are a lot of factors that are actually making this number grow. So what’s the solution? If you’re building a new projection model that doesn’t need sources or

Almost every tool that provides data has segmentation capabilities. Comparing segments shows you the differences in your customers that you won't see as a whole. Finding these differences can:
❗️Highlight an underserved market or customer demographic
❗️Further define the success of your campaigns and channel traffic
❗️Find journeys on your site that customers get stuck on and those that are excellent for conversions
❗️Find places to optimize your experience based on browser, device, and more
