We at lvl believe that the best way to approach diversity is proactive. So we’re giving a shoutout to SALTO-YOUTH, a youth empowerment network of resource centers across Europe. SALTO-YOUTH stands for “Support, Advanced Learning and Training Opportunities for Youth”. It works within Erasmus+, the EU’s program for education, training, youth and sport.

Embracing Diversity is their management guide for organizations working with intercultural youth written in cooperation with Rahel Aschwanden. The booklet aims to help organizations develop the required capacities to embrace human differences and make their projects more inclusive.

Illustrations by Brazilian artist Sofia Martinez Andreazza show people of diverse backgrounds. They have been split and joined together in unlikely combos to portray how differences between humans often overlap and that, no matter how diverse, we can always find things in common.

Artist, socialite, writer, diplomat and fashion editor Fleur Cowles is best known as the creative force behind the short-lived Flair magazine, which ran in the early 1950s.

Cowles changed the concept of the magazine from a disposable rag to a desirable and collectible high art object. Flair experimented so wildly and brilliantly with paper sizes, textures and technology that it broke the bank. But it will always be remembered for its provocative design, sophisticated advertising layouts, and production quality.

Saki Mafundikwa hopes to encourage design students to learn from Africa’s rich visual heritage to forge an African attitude rather than an African aesthetic.

In 1997, Mafundikwa ended his career as a designer in New York and went back to his native Zimbabwe to open the country’s first graphic design and new media school of the country: ZIVA (Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts).

His book “Afrikan Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Afrika” documents the alphabets and visual symbols of the continent and its valuable contribution to the history of visual communication. It includes scripts such as Mende, Vai, Nsibidi, Bamum, Tifinagh, Somali and Ethiopian. It also studies other alphabets, syllabaries, paintings, pictographs, ideographs, and symbols.

Mafundikwa’s mission is to initiate an "African renaissance", to see Africa through a different lens, one not tainted with the overwhelming prejudices of the past.

The colorful pin-back buttons that today adorn backpacks, jean jackets, hats, and more, first appeared during the US presidential campaign of 1896. Coated with celluloid, a material new at the time, the pin-back button was a stylish departure from the metal clothing buttons used in previous political campaigns.

The pin-back button allowed for endless and colorful graphic possibilities and self-expression long before the arrival of social media.

Designer, painter, and photographer Franco Grignani is best known for his black and white graphics, especially the Woolmark logo, which was voted Best Logo of all Time by Creative Review Magazine in 2011.

His knowledge of theories of perception, such as the Psychology of Form, and of optic and visual phenomena were the basis for his continuous experimental work.

A pioneer of Kinetic Art and Op Art (optical art, a style of visual art that uses optical illusions), Grignani is considered one of the most influential Italian designers of the 20th century.

Sometimes the most important information can be a little hard to digest. Rockefeller Foundation tasked lvl with the challenge of presenting important statistics about health and diet into a series of infographics that can be easily understood and enjoyable to consume.

This infographic takes the idea of a board game to present the different journeys people can take based on dietary choices and health factors, showing how a healthy diet and lifestyle can improve outcomes related to Covid-19.

Fix, a technology startup focused on delivering gourmet desserts, asked lvl to help design its brand identity. We developed the name “fix” as a playful and memorable twist on the concept of a sugar fix.

The rawness of the name was combined with ornate artistic details inspired in greek victory seals to give the brand a quality feel. We carried this theme into the packaging design, mobile app UX and service design to help Fix deliver an end-to-end extraordinary customer experience.
