I’ve been pretty quiet on here… mostly because this time of year is basically the Olympics for anyone in ecomm/marketing. If I haven’t texted you back, it’s probably because I’m currently drowning in Black Friday hell. (Feel free to triple-text me until my spiraling guilt wins.)

HOWEVER…I’ve been super lucky to spend the last few months supporting some incredible brands:

TKEES: UGH a dream. I was already a fan, but the team is so kind and so talented (they’re from Toronto, so naturally). Designing their emails has been dangerous for me because now I want every pair.

MAVARA: A small business making high-quality leather goods that feel timeless, elevated, and surprisingly accessible. Their bags are 😘🤌.

Dana Bandi: Sophisticated, chic womenswear designed with intention. Pieces you invest in, wear forever, and quietly flex. PLUS, BIPOC-owned and run by such a badass.

Jeans Gallery: Such a cool project. A NY-based gallery featuring Picasso ceramics and making fine art feel less gatekept and more understood.

Grateful for the trust, the creativity, and the beautiful chaos. And grateful for the people who still love me even when I disappear into Figma/Photoshop for weeks at a time.

More soon 💛

New email client, .

Been a fan of TKEES minimal and thoughtful brand aesthetic for a while, and was happily surprised when they reached out to me for support with their email program. Doesn’t hurt that everyone on their team is just as lovely as their products 💙

A favorite brand guidelines project for a sustainable fine jewelry company ✨

Just a small sneak peek 👀 at some of the core elements of the brand & tone guidelines I help create for clients.

Here’s what’s included:
🖤 Visual Guidelines (logo usage, color palette, typography, imagery guidelines, application examples across different mediums)
🖤 Brand Pillars
🖤 Brand Personality
🖤 Brand Messaging (mission statement, tagline, brand bio, founder bio)
🖤 Customer Profiles
🖤 Tone & Voice Guidelines (guidelines for consistent communication, sample text and messaging, adaption for different channels and audiences)

IMO this is the minimum of what you should have for your brand in order to establish a cohesive brand identity. If you’ve ever been frustrated with team members, freelancers, or outside vendors that keep returning content and deliverables that just isn’t right, clear brand guidelines could be the solution. As a founder or a small business, sometimes all of the “sauce” lives in your own brain 🧠 and it’s hard to articulate what you’re wanting to others. This could help.

If you’re not running A/B tests, you’re missing out on invaluable learning opportunities.🫢

And just because you ran tests a year ago, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t run them again. If your list continues to grow, your audience continues to change, and creating an A/B testing roadmap allows you to better understand your ever-evolving audience’s preferences.

I challenge you to choose one of these A/B tests to run for the next 30 days. Comment below which one you’re going to test.💡

The amount of times I have the urge to email a brand a list of things they should be doing differently in their email program…😮‍💨

At the end of the day, what it comes down to is having a customer-first mentality to your strategy. This phrase is thrown around a lot, but it’s easy as marketers and small business owners to get into a rinse and repeat cycle, and lose sight of how your marketing is actually being received by your customers.

p.s. I actually *did* reach out to a brand once with step by step instructions on what was broken in their email program 🫢

Happy to do the same for you 🙂

There is beauty in what’s broken.

Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese philosophy and art style similar to wabi-sabi, in that it encourages you to embrace flaws and imperfections. The art of kintsugi entails repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer– it literally means ‘joining in gold’.

“The story of kintsugi—this style of pottery—may be the most perfect embodiment of all our trauma-shattered lives... Instead of throwing away the broken beloved pottery, we’ll fix it in a way that doesn’t pretend it hasn’t been broken but honors the breaking—and more so, the surviving—by highlighting those repaired seams with gold lacquer. Now the object is functional once again and dignified, not discarded. It’s stronger and even more valuable because of its reinforced, golden scars.” – Jay Wolf

A broken piece that is put back together has more of a story, seems more authentic and real, is stronger and more resilient than something that has stayed pristine. The breaking of what once was, the layered and time-consuming process of putting it back together, the mending with gold, all contribute to its value. After being mended, it becomes even stronger than it was before.

In the realm of business, this philosophy translates for me into a ‘break things first’ mentality. Embracing and even encouraging failures as a way to learn and grow.

On a more personal note, my health journey has been a testament to this philosophy. From a young age, I’ve faced numerous health challenges, culminating in a recent life-saving heart procedure. Initially, I was trapped in negativity and disillusionment, but I now see the beauty in those experiences. They have granted me a broader, more empathetic perspective on life, the challenges we face, and the resilience inherent in our bodies, minds, and spirits.

Just as broken pottery is mended with gold, our experiences shape us, making us more authentic. As you navigate life, work, growing your business, remember setbacks are opportunities for growth. Surrender to your journey, and learn to see your imperfections as golden opportunities for growth.

Fun fact: I actually had no intention of starting my consulting agency when I did 😬

I had my first discovery call in 2020, while I was still working as Director of Retention at my last full-time job. After that, things kind of organically snowballed and 3 years later, here we are! 😅

Needless to say, I had a *lot* to figure out in a very short amount of time, from figuring out my offer suite & rates to business name and ideal client.

I made my fair share of mistakes, but luckily had support from a business coach (s/o 🫶) to help with my overall framework, and very kind & patient first clients who trusted me with their brand’s success.

Here are a few things I learned along the way, so hopefully you don’t have to deal with the failing part.

Favorite .intimates essential kits 🖤

About KYE—

CHOICES
Each piece is lovingly designed and handmade in Los Angeles in close partnership with a local, female owned factory.

Their intimates are made from carefully selected deadstock or renewable materials to minimize their impact on the environment. They use certified lead and nickel free hardware to ensure comfort and ease of wear.

I’m blessed to own several pieces from ’ss collections, & even more blessed to call her my dear friend. My favorites right now are from her lounge collection. This is one of the biggest challenges e-commerce small businesses deal with, though I’ve seen this issue for 6, 7, even 8 to 10 figure brands.

It prevents you from getting the real, consistent growth your brand is hoping for.

THE CHALLENGE: You’re not taking the time to truly understand your customers.

If I had to guess, here’s what’s going on:
- You’re a solopreneur. You’re doing all the things. There is quite literally not enough time for you to dedicate to this.
- You have a lean team and everyone is wearing 100 hats, but no one is truly a marketing expert. You’re all just trying to stay afloat.

Without a true understanding of who you’re selling to, you’re essentially throwing strategies and ad spend into the air, hoping someone will bite.

So, what should you do?
- Dig into your existing data. This is the best place to start. Look at your top customers and figure out who they are, what their purchasing habits are, how they heard about you.
- Talk to your customers! Send surveys, request 1 on 1 calls, share polls on IG, invite your top customers to a happy hour–seriously! As great as and spreadsheets are, you’re just piecing together information to form hypotheses about them. Hearing answers directly from their mouths is as real as it gets. Plus, showing them there are real humans behind the brand that care what they think could be what sets you apart from your competitors.

I was lucky enough to work with Paul Rich as one of my first clients. They allowed me to dig deep into their customer files and do what needed to be done to truly understand their target audience before formulating their overall marketing calendar. This helped to inform strategies henceforth, which ultimately led to the unbelievable results I’ve shared above.

There are a lot of brands trying to sell stuff to you every day. The ones who actually take the time to 1) make products they know you’ll love 2) share them with you in ways you resonate with and 3) actually take you as a human being into consideration when doing so are the ones that will win in the end.
