5–6 things you probably didn’t know about the wine industry 🍇

After travelling around Australia and spending time with growers and winemakers, these are a few truths that really stood out to us:

• No one gets into the wine industry to get rich. It’s a lifestyle driven by passion, not profit.
• Good wine isn’t necessarily expensive, and expensive wine isn’t always great.
• Winemakers are farmers first, with harvests dictated by weather, not schedules.
• You can make bad wine from good grapes, but you can’t make good wine from bad grapes.
• Growing grapes is a science, not a form of gardening - soil, climate and data matter.
• And yes… winemaking involves a lot of cleaning 🧽🍷

Hello from me! It’s time to re-introduce myself to anyone new here or anyone who joined me along the way but can’t even remember what I look like .😀 Yes, I am a photographer but I hardly take photos of myself.

I am Kairi - a food, wine and travel photographer, big foodie, amateur cook and a big wine lover.

I have just completed the lap of Australia and now in the process of moving closer to the beach to lovely Airlie Beach and building a house up there. I am also currently working on self-publishing a book on Australian wineries and people behind it all.

While on here it looks like I don’t do much, in the last year around the country I really learned to focus more on what really matters in life. I will still try to share the most important updates on life and some of my work when I feel like it. And if any of that resonates with you, thank you for following along! 🙌

Currently at the stage of going through all the interviews I did with wineries along the way of doing the lap in last 12 months and pulling together photos to appear under each feature in my wine book. Needless to say it’s bloody hard work and me literally spending 8-10 hours behind my screen.

But looking back going through photos and listening all recordings, so many great memories spring to mind. There are so many great moments of truth, so many “I bet you didn’t know that” stories. And, even though I am exhausted af, I am super grateful to have met all the people we did. Wine is never just a wine. Wine is something that relates to good times. There is always a story behind wine and people who have put their blood, sweat and tears into making your favourite wines. Can’t wait to share some more insights with you.

Home is where the heart is.

A few weeks into our lap of travelling Australia, we knew we wanted to move out of city into a small seaside town somewhere around the country. The lap was about adventure, doing things in life that we really wanted to do and also learning new things. There were amazing places everywhere in Australia but for us as soon as we crossed the boarder back to QLD, we knew it had to be here. There were places we knew before which we revisited along the way. And, it just happened that we ended up choosing Whitsundays as our new home. Our place in Brissy is now sold and we’re making our way back up to Airlie Beach in a new year. Looking forward to the next chapter. How can you not love a backyard like this?

Name something most wineries have in common… 🍇🍷

Most wineries were started by a passionate young couple or a dedicated family chasing a dream — often with little more than a plot of land, a lot of heart, and a love for wine. 💛
Even the big-name, corporate wineries? Most of them began the same way — small, humble, and family-run before growing into the giants they are today.

But when I visit a winery, I always find myself drawn to the small, boutique spots — where you’re not just a number through the cellar door, and every bottle tells a personal story. There’s something special about shaking hands with the owner and/or winemaker, hearing about their journey, and tasting wines that were made with intention and care.

So here’s your reminder: support small. Visit the hidden gems. And toast to the families behind the label. 🥂
