Five children were killed in a tragic accident on Thursday after wind picked up a jumping castle and threw it into the air at a school’s end-of-year activity day in Australia.

Several children from grades 5 and 6 fell from a height of about 10 metres, according to witnesses, after the jumping castle was blown into the air by a gust of wind at Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport, Tasmania. Three remain in hospital and are in critical condition.

Teachers in South Dakota were seen on video frantically shoving $1 bills into their shirts off of a local hockey arena’s ice aspart of a competition to get money for school supplies this past weekend.

The video, which has since gone viral, shows the so-called “Dash for Cash” playing out at a junior hockey game in Sioux Falls Saturday. The event was ostensibly intended as a bit of lighthearted fun: The teachers were wearing hockey helmets, and at least one took off a festive reindeer-like hat to collect more bills from the pile that had accumulated at center ice. The director of business development and marketing for CU Mortgage Direct, which funded the teachers’ winnings—$5,000 in all—also told the Argus Leader the company felt it was an “awesome group thing to do” after a couple of difficult pandemic years for educators.

The father of the 15-year-old charged in Tuesday’s horrific school shooting in Michigan bought the gun suspected in the killings just four days prior. Now, he and the child’s mother might be charged as well, the county’s top prosecutor said Wednesday.

Ethan Crumbley, a sophomore at Oxford High School in a suburb north of Detroit, was charged Wednesday as an adult with murder, attempted murder, and terrorism causing death. The suspect allegedly opened fire at the school shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, killing at least four of his classmates and injuring a half-dozen more, as well as a teacher.

Leaders from southern Africa have joined the World Health Organisation in speaking out against the wave of travel bans imposed by the UK, EU and the US following the discovery of the COVID variant now known as Omicron.

After the new variant, which some experts fear could be more transmissible than the Delta strain, was identified by South African scientists last week, several countries rushed to shut their borders to southern Africa. The US government has blocked flights from Botswana, South Africa, Malawi, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho. Meanwhile, almost identical measures have been taken by the UK and EU.

On Wednesday night, the Twitter account for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior Affairs (MOI) announced that a foreign company was investing $450 million into setting up a hashish processing factory within the country. The factory – due to launch soon, according to the Twitter account – would manufacture hashish-based medicines and creams and give job opportunities to hundreds of people. It would also signal the Taliban government’s first official deal as a legal seller of narcotics.
