MEDAN, Indonesia – Ahmad Shah soaked his clothes in petrol before igniting the liquid using two cigarette lighters. His clothes burst into flames, turning him into a human fireball in front of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees building in the city of Medan – the agency that the 22-year-old Afghan refugee felt had failed him.

As his clothes melted into his skin, Shah screamed and paced frantically before a quick thinking security guard grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and sprayed him with it.

Tennessee Republican lawmakers have strong-armed the state’s medical licensing board into walking back a warning against doctors spreading misinformation and lies about COVID-19.

In July, the state’s public health agency ended outreach for all forms of vaccination to children before later resuming nearly all forms of that outreach, after public outcry.

Now, the state’s Board of Medical Examiners, which issues medical licenses, has been forced to delete a policy from its website stating that healthcare providers who spread COVID-19 misinformation could have their medical licenses suspended or revoked, according to the Tennessean. The decision reportedly came after an influential House lawmaker threatened to dissolve the board if they didn’t walk back the guidance.

Germany’s incoming coalition government has confirmed it will legalise cannabis, turning the country into one of the world’s largest legal w**d markets.

The move, agreed by the centre-left coalition led by Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, was included in plans published Wednesday. On cannabis reform, the coalition agreement said: “We are introducing the controlled supply of cannabis to adults for consumption purposes in licensed shops. This controls the quality, prevents the transfer of contaminated substances and guarantees the protection of minors.”

The last time the ultra-conservative faction of House Republicans known as the Freedom Caucus elected a leader, Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry hadn’t quite earned his bona fides. Now, fresh off news that he played a key role in Donald Trump’s 2020 coup attempt, Perry is apparently much more qualified for the job.

Perry got elected as the new chairman of the Freedom Caucus this week, inheriting the job created by its founder, a then-North Carolina congressman named Mark Meadows. Yup, that’s the same Mark Meadows who went on to become Trump’s White House chief of staff and who this week refused to comply with a subpoena from the January 6 select committee to tell what he knows about Trump’s coup attempt.

The Freedom Caucus was once the place where 40 or so right-wing lawmakers like Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan made trouble for GOP leaders, messing with bills over conservative leverage issues like abortion and immigration. They got powerful enough to oust Speaker John Boehner in 2015, and he’s had a few things to say about them since. Today, the Freedom Caucus is Trump’s most loyal power base in Congress, where messianic messengers like Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Paul Gosar gather to push lies about a stolen election and to help recast the deadly Jan. 6 riot as a patriotic cause.
