Can you identify a specific point in your life that defines who you are today? I can, I was 13 and went to India on a volunteering trip organised by my school. It was the most terrifying and exciting experience of my life. You can hear about this and more on the 'Can Do Way' Podcast with the fabulous Gail Gibson here: https://bit.ly/CanDoHW

My rucksack was bigger than I was (I was tiny at 13!), it was my first time on a plane and outside of the UK, to a country where the sights, sounds and smells were like nothing I had ever imagined. And without my parents or family.

We spent four weeks in India, most of the time volunteering at an Ashram for orphaned girls in the foothills of the Himalayas but we also travelled around on steam trains and buses; meeting wonderful people, admiring the architecture and swimming with elephants.

I came back having lost a lot of weight but gained a new view of the world and of life that has influenced everything I do.

It's only in recent years I have realised how this important this and I talk about this and how it shaped me to have adventures, volunteer my time and be resilient and grateful.

I'll write more about 'India 1988' another time but take a listen to the podcast and let me know what you think. It's my first one but I'm available for more!

Thanks Gail Gibson for the opportunity, I hope people find it helpful!

She Describes it as "A dynamic conversation filled with discovery. Helen’s 'Can Do' story inspires you to explore what gives you purpose, to grasp opportunities that fulfil you, and to live life as a fun adventure."

If you haven't got time to listen my 'Can Do' tips are:

1. Stay active and curious.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice.
3. Find your purpose – your ‘thing’.

I was so wrong about starting my own businesses.

I really thought I had done my research, asked all the right questions, listened to advice and was well on my way.

I signed up for all the free courses and help I could get and particularly from Start and Grow Enterprise, the government support for entrepreneurs and new businesses from The Growth Hub - Gloucestershire.

Run in conjunction with the University of Gloucestershire I arrived for the 'Start' course yesterday with low expectations.

You have to do this course before your can get any additional help so I was thinking I would just sit through basic 'business planning' training and then get to the more interesting courses.

Wow, was I wrong! Richard Gray from www.wearecanoe.com quickly understood our business ideas and grasped our individual opportunities and issues. He gave great insights and challenged us to think in a different way.

It was much more like a coaching session than my preconceived and possibly arrogant assumption of being spoon fed business planning! I was really happy to be proved wrong and I am not afraid to admit it.

Looking forward to seeing the results of putting my 90 day plan in to practice - #2 launches on the 1 November!

If you are thinking of setting up your own business in Gloucestershire then sign up for the Start and Grow Enterprise support (link in comments below).

And, if you want someone that will help you grow and develop you and your business than have a chat with Richard.

PS: The University of Gloucestershire is where I started my business and marketing journey 30 years ago, it's only right that I was back there to start my second career. Fresher to Entrepreneur - it took me a while but it's never too late!

I have been reading that it's a tough time for online retailers, the bounty of lockdown has ended and we are all aware that people have less money to spend.

If you have online shop or a full e-commerce site, or just want to learn more about paid and organic digital marketing then this looks like a good event to help with your Q4 strategy and 2023 plan.

Taking place on 19 October at a great venue, The Lost & Found Bristol, the Infinity Nation E-Commerce Masterclass will help you Recession Proof Your Online Sales Strategy,

And it’s just £15 which includes refreshments and lunch (looks tasty!) if booked by Wednesday 5 October. I'll be there!

Experts will talk about:
Getting on the front foot with your E-Commerce Strategy - Hear how recent events have impacted channel costs, and what you can do to stand out in a cluttered market and maximise your marketing budget.

Looking outside your ‘banker channels’ for growth in a competitive market taking you through alternatives to the standard ecommerce digital marketing media options. Focussing on upper funnel channels to build new customers reaching your website – and how to measure success from this investment.

AdSmart from Sky - Keeping costs down with digital TV advertising through targeting viewers by location and demographic and how this allows pinpoint targeting to minimise budget wastage and increase reach to customers you want.

Common client questions, and tools to get the answers will cover the main questions from clients right now. You’ll learn how we approach evidence-based reporting and how to map insights to the numbers being reported from your digital activity.

Top tips for getting the most from your Social Commerce strategy - great for those managing social channels or social media agencies with actionable top tips for maximising ROAS from your seasonal campaigns.

A Client Case Study show how this happens in practice, what success looks like and how it was achieved.
