You're setting your content team up for failure 🤦🏾‍♀️
..if you don't make clear distinctions between personas, use cases, and core selling points.

❌ Not every piece of content is meant for everyone in your target market (unless you're targeting a singular, well-defined persona)
❌ Not every use case will be the most attractive one for different subsets of your audience
❌ Not every selling point will be the most compelling one for the different personas you're targeting

Failing to clarify which of these elements map to which aspects of your audience:

1. Creates (unnecessary) research work for your content team, whether they're in-house or an external partner
2. Requires you to spend more time editing or giving redirection to content producers
3. Increases the chances of misalignment that can dampen the impact of your content and confuse your audience

Stop shooting yourself in the foot.

You have the information. If you haven't already, share it with your content team.

Imagine going to an open house but the realtor won't let you past the porch 🙅 Do the chances of you buying the home go up or down? (I'll bet I know your answer.)

Many SaaS companies are like that realtor.

They have decent spiels about how great their products are. Meanwhile, they block the front door, not allowing potential users to see inside.

The fear? That openly showcasing their products in content is a turnoff.

But potential users *do* have curiosities about product, even if only subconsciously or indirectly.

❓"What are its capabilities and do they align with my goals?"
❓"What are the user interface and user experience like?"
❓"What features are available and how do they work?"

By answering those in detail and not just in bottom of the funnel content, you:

1. Prove that your solution is what you say it is
2. Acclimate potential users to the product, reducing hesitation to convert and obstacles after signup
3. Boost retention by showing existing users how to get the most out of the product

You can talk product more than you think as long as you:

1. Educate first
2. Don't hard-sell
3. Offer a solid solution to a real audience problem
4. Present the right solutions to the right people

So, stop trying to sell buyers from the front porch; let them in.

You can do better than a swipe file 😏

Sure, content from others that you admire is helpful for inspiration. But it's not the *only* content that's valuable during the writing process.

Build a content library complete with:

✅ Content you disagree with (great for fueling thought leadership)
✅ Recent research and resources (a big time-saver during the research stage)
✅ Your event and course notes (also a time-saver and potential source of expert quotes)

It's ALL helpful for writing well and writing efficiently.

Speaking of...here are 15 other tips for writing well and efficiently 👇🏾

Too few resources, too much content to produce, and too little time. Sound familiar? Probably. Many tech startups run into this problem with one of two

What's one of the simplest ways to take your content from decent to top-notch? 🔝

Interviewing subject matter experts (or members of your target audience/customer base).

This can seem intimidating if you're not used to it. But interviewing is a muscle worth exercising.

Where do you start?

I wrote about is, explaining how to:

1) Prepare well for interviews beforehand
2) Extract valuable insights during discussions with interviewees
3) Use insights from interviews strategically to create content that's far superior to the cookie-cutter stuff already available on your topic

Give it a read 👀

Bland, impersonal, and lacking authority. Much of the content writers and marketers produce today fits that description. This is largely a result of

Data is a double-edged sword 🗡️

In the content world, we joke about how often ancient data is passed off as still accurate.

In reality, a lot of recent data is also misleading because of the way it's presented.

Companies survey 2,000 people in a huge industry and then say, "73% of people in the industry have this opinion." Well, not really.

Or writers say, "68% of consumers exhibit this buying behavior." But they leave out that the study they're referencing only surveyed 300 consumers between the ages of 18-24.

Yes, having data to back up your stance is valuable. And, yes, a 100% comprehensive and accurate study probably doesn't exist.

But we all need to do a better job of making sure the data we reference *actually* supports our arguments. Or else, state *possibilities* the data points to rather than creating facts.

Negotiation 101:

☑️ Decide before you're put on the spot if you'll negotiate and under what circumstances.

☑️ Avoid countering your own price. Ask the prospect for a budget or counter-offer.

☑️ Don't just negotiate price; negotiate scope. A lower rate should = less work.

Never struggle to structure content again. Some ideas:

1. Set the stage so that others make sense
2. Are main attractions
3. Are closely related to main points
4. Are side points for sparking interest in related content

Put 'em in order accordingly. (Hint: It's already done 👆🏾)
