We are excited to receive diverse proposals from educators, practitioners, and students around the globe engaging with South Asian design. We are extending the call for submissions to June 5. Please help spread the word with interested colleagues, students, and communities........
Calling all design researchers, practitioners, educators, and students engaging with South Asian design—submit your work to the first (VIRTUAL) Angan Symposium 2026. We welcome short/long papers, posters (visual essays), participation in Graduate Forum, and portfolio reviews. All abstracts undergo double-blind peer review, with accepted abstracts and selected papers published in the Angan Online Journal.

NEETA VERMA is a researcher, designer, and educator, and Associate Professor(retired) from the University of Notre Dame, whose work explores design as a tool for social equity and justice. Her work investigates systemic social issues through the lens of power, privilege, and participatory practice, and has received national and international recognition. She holds an MFA from Yale University and an MDes from the National Institute of Design.

SAURABH TEWARI, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Design at IIT Delhi, where he leads the DeSH Lab (Design Studies and History Laboratory), researching postcolonial design history, urbanism, and repair cultures. His doctoral thesis charts a South Asian design history. He has co-edited volumes on landscape urbanism, sustainability, and design cultures, and supervises research at the intersection of design, society, and the built environment.

POUYA JAHANSHAHI is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Oklahoma State University, an endowed professor in Global Studies, and Director of the MFA program. His research explores hybrid visual cultures, Iranian typography, semiotics, and time-based media. He is the founder of Design for Peace and Justice, and his curated project, 20x20 Posters for Peace, has been exhibited internationally to promote messages of peace through design.

MUNTAZAR MONSUR, PhD is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Texas Tech University. His teaching and research focus on designing environments that support children’s and families’ health, well-being, creativity, and learning through play and interaction. He also leads the DoLA XR Lab, which explores the use of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies in landscape architecture education and research.

ARTI SANDHU is an Associate Professor in the Fashion Program in the at the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), University of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Her research is centered on contemporary Indian fashion and related design culture. She is the author of Indian Fashion: Tradition, Innovation, Style (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015). SADEA Angan Symposium: July 16th and 17th (virtual)
Dear design researchers and practitioners whose work engages with and expands South Asian* design, we invite you to consider submitting your work to the first South Asian design symposium, Angan.

Abstract Submissions:
All abstracts will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Submissions for Angan Symposium 2026 includes short and long papers, posters (visual essays) from educators, practitioners, researchers and students. The symposium will host graduate student forum presentations, and portfolio reviews. All accepted abstracts and selected papers will be published in the Angan Online Journal.

Please submit abstracts via the Angan Google Form by May 30th, and note that registration opens on June 1st, 2026.

Hawa Stwodah (BFA, MFA) is a designer, illustrator, and educator whose career spans multiple sectors within the fashion industry. She has worked in the United States and the Middle East, collaborating with companies in Europe and Asia, and consulting on experimental designs that utilize innovative textiles for apparel, healthcare, and infant accessories. She left the private sector to join Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Fashion Design + Merchandising, working at both the Richmond and Doha, Qatar campuses. Her projects have been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she examines identity, social behaviors, and visual communication through the lens of surface design............
Chat Masala are guest lecture series that honors people of the South Asian diaspora around the globe and their varied explorative practices.
