Greenland is one of the most unusual islands on Earth. Despite its enormous size, this is one of the most lifeless places on the planet, whose nature has not yet been fully understood.
Over 80% of the island's territory is covered by ice sheets. The colossal weight of this centuries-old mass of ice causes the earth's crust to sink in many places, forming concave basins that reach 360 meters below sea level. And at the same time, according to scientists, the entire central part of the island is one large mountain range, which is part of the northeastern edge of the ancient Canadian shield (height up to 3231 m in the center of the island). In the western part, an ancient crystalline shield comes to the surface, forming a belt of mountain ranges cut by valleys and fjords along the coast of the Baffin Sea.
