রসুলুল্লাহ বলেছেন, মানুষের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল হলো মৃত্যুকে দূরের ঘটনা ভাবা, অথচ তা মানুষের ঠিক চোখের পলকের দূরত্বে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে। আরেক জায়গায় এসেছে, আদম সন্তানের বয়স যাই হোক, মৃত্যু তার দিকে এমনভাবে এগিয়ে আসে যে সে বুঝতেই পারে না—একটি নিঃশ্বাস আসা–যাওয়ার ব্যবধানই আসলে জীবনের সবচেয়ে ভঙ্গুর সীমা। সাহাবারা বলতেন, তোমার পরের নিঃশ্বাস ফিরবে—এই নিশ্চয়তা তোমার হাতে নেই।

হাদিসের ভাষা আমাদের মূলত এই কথাই শেখায়—মৃত্যু দূরের বজ্রপাত নয়, বরং নিজের ছায়ার মতো কাছে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা সত্য। তাই মানুষকে প্রস্তুত থাকতে বলা হয়েছে কাজ, নিয়ত আর আচরণ ঠিক করার মাধ্যমে; ভয় দেখানোর জন্য নয়, বরং বুঝিয়ে দেওয়ার জন্য যে সময় খুব কম, আর সুযোগটাই আসল।
