Notice to all stakeholders, companies benefiting from complimentary advertising are hereby notified to cease the campaign forthwith due to an ongoing dispute with a former photographer. The photographer in question was engaged to capture images and gather information for submission to the publisher. Regrettably, the photographer's subsequent request to retract their work following compensation was declined. Fortunately, three individuals contributed $15 each towards settling outstanding fees and debts, while a client's payment for services rendered helped mitigate some financial burdens. However, a novel challenge has emerged in the form of Darren Talbot and Julie Kotzapetros, who operate their own site, albeit non-functioning, and have illicitly accessed and misused company data, including contact details and emails, via unauthorized access to the company computer. Efforts to retrieve our data without permission have proven arduous, and the situation has been brought to the attention of the police and Google. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding in this matter.

The owner of the Port Pirie and Hobart smelters says its operations will "simply not survive" without taxpayer support to combat alleged market distortion from China.

27/11/2025

Many businesses are struggling in Port Pirie due to the economic uncertainty surrounding the large Nyrstar smelter, which is losing millions of dollars monthly. This instability is impacting the broader community by causing a ripple effect on local spending and creating a general climate of financial hardship, exacerbated by cost of living pressures and drought impacting farming communities.
Economic instability from the Nyrstar smelter
The Port Pirie smelter, a major employer and the town's key industry, is facing financial distress.
The company has stated it is losing tens of millions of dollars per month due to market distortion from China, and that its long-term viability requires government support.
Concerns about the smelter's future have created a significant "cloud of doubt" over the town, as a closure would have a devastating impact on local businesses that rely on the smelter's workforce and the wider economy.
Community-wide financial pressures
The economic uncertainty is having a "ripple effect" on the entire community, leading to a general downturn in local spending.
Residents are facing tough times due to cost of living pressures, which further reduces discretionary spending on local businesses.
The drought has also impacted the local farming communities, with the effects rippling out to the broader community.
Impact on small businesses
The overall economic downturn and the pressure on the town's largest employer have made it difficult for smaller businesses to survive.
Some local businesses are struggling to stay afloat as residents cut back on spending or lose their jobs due to the wider economic effects.

Recent data shows a slight decrease in violent crime, a significant increase in motor vehicle theft, and a drop in break-ins between 2020-22 and 2022-24. While night-time safety is a concern, many residents describe a strong sense of community.
Crime rate trends
Violent crime: Decreased slightly by 0.6% between 2020-22 and 2022-24, with a rate of 6,278 incidents per 100,000 residents.

Break-ins: Decreased by 6.9% between 2020-22 and 2022-24, to a rate of 1,895 incidents per 100,000 residents.
Contributing factors
As a regional hub, Port Pirie attracts people from surrounding areas, which can lead to a higher likelihood of interpersonal crime.
Challenges in accessing services like health and employment support may contribute to higher conflict rates.
Other safety indicators
Night-time safety is a concern for the community.
Despite some crime statistics, many residents report a strong sense of community.
Maybe 2026 will be a safer place now everything is changing.
