A greener Empire State Plaza could be coming to Albany 🏗️🌳

New York State has unveiled a new vision for reconnecting the Empire State Plaza with the surrounding city, backed by a $25 million investment. Plans call for improvements aimed at making the 98-acre complex more welcoming and accessible, including a new west-side “porch” and walkway, additional green space, upgrades to the Corning Tower observation deck and an expanded visitor center 🙌

The project is part of the larger $400 million Championing Albany’s Potential initiative aimed at revitalizing the Capital city 👏

This just in: Viva Empanadas is open for business 🎉

Located inside the former Moby Rick’s Seafood, Viva Empanadas is an authentic, Latin kitchen serving up handmade empanadas, elevated entrees and creative cocktails in this beautifully renovated space. Every dish and drink is packed with unique flavors inspired by the owner’s culture, her travels and past culinary experience after relocating Upstate from New York City in 2020.

Viva Empanadas also operates in Latham’s Galleria 7 Market and on N. Pearl Street in downtown Albany. Citing slow business in the Albany location due to a lack of people downtown, the team is hoping to see more consistent support from the Saratoga community so they can introduce their top-tier food to a new group of people, and live their dream of running a thriving, woman-owned small business in the Great Upstate 🫶

Give them a warm welcome to the Spa City and stop in to get the full dining experience or to grab some takeout —you will not be disappointed 🤩

(PS: about 90 percent of the menu is gluten-free ✔️)

This just in: Central Warehouse has cleared another major hurdle toward demolition 👀

Albany County has received the needed permits to tear down Central Warehouse as crews near completion of the material and debris abatement process inside the long-abandoned building. More than 4,000 tons of material and debris have been removed from the 11-story, 400,000-square-foot warehouse since August 2025 🧨

New York’s history has been hiding just beneath Albany’s surface 👀

Volunteer crews have uncovered part of the original Erie Canal’s Lock One in downtown Albany, revealing a piece of the city’s past that’s been buried for generations. The excavation offers a rare look at the infrastructure that once connected Albany to the rest of New York and helped transform the city into a major center of commerce 🏗️

The group is advocating for restoring the historic lock, opening up the Warehouse District to downtown, and sparking a potential development wave the city hasn’t scene in generations…

Another piece of Albany history has come down 🧱🎶

The former home of Blue Note Record Shop on Central Avenue in Albany was demolished Tuesday, marking the end of a building remembered by generations of local music fans. The shop was a longtime destination for records and music in the city, with locals recalling buying some of their first records there and even seeing appearances by notable musicians. The demolition prompted an outpouring of memories from Albany residents who remember the building from its record-store days 😢

It’s been 10 years since CDPHP Cycle made its way to the Capital Region👀

Behind the scenes, a team of dedicated bike professionals keeps this massive, multi-city operation running smoothly around the clock—keeping bikes in good shape, charged up and ready for the next rider without users having to lift a finger 🗺️

The program has become an incredible addition to the Great Upstate, with more than 500,000 rides and counting 📈

Shoutout to CDTA for spearheading the initiative and CDPHP for continuing to support a program that keeps the Capital Region moving 🙌
