Joseph Kosuth Exhibition Booklet

For this piece, I was tasked to create a typography-based brochure for an exhibition featuring a designer of my choice. I selected Joseph Kosuth, a conceptual artist that frequently pushes the boundaries of design. Kosuth relied heavily on language as art, making him an ideal candidate to research.

I practiced using justified text to maintain a strict geometric grid and was able to integrate typographic art. I was influenced by Swiss design and wanted to rely on a high contrast palette only using red, grey and black. I managed to combine my style with Joseph’s photographs to create a modern design that speaks to the artist himself. Joseph believes words are simply powerful, so in response I wanted my headers to be visually powerful in size and colour. I was able to find reliable articles to combine as well.

Pivot Brand Guidelines

I designed a brand guidelines manual to keep our branding consistent. It is important to maintain consistency to gain trust from your consumer. We encourage our brand to be unisex and positive. Guidelines must be followed to ensure recognizability.

The manual includes original characters, icons, typefaces, colours, and more. Pivot is recognized by one logo and symbol which must always be legible with clear space and size requirements. Our company colours are blue to represent tranquility and bright orange to represent positivity. Moon was set as our primary typeface due to its friendly and gender-neutral appeal, however urbane rounded was selected as a secondary typeface. Our products and advertising include Pivot characters and patterns which can be replicated according to our rules. These brand guidelines need to be utilized when creating applications.

Solar Raw Kale Chips Campaign

Solar Raw Kale Chips is a company that is trying to breach the chip and healthy food market. My objective was to create a marketing strategy that will make Solar Raw more recognizable and appealing, especially since not everyone likes eating healthy or Kale. Every brand can benefit from a spokesman or recognizable mascot. What came to mind is Popeye, a cartoon character who has fallen into the public domain, who is known for eating spinach. I wanted to bring back nostalgia as well as gain recognizability with the brand. The campaign slogan is “Kale is the new spinach” to avoid confusion of the product being spinach itself.

Quench Magazine Redesign

Magazines can fall victim to reusing the same templates repeatedly. Quench is a template-driven monthly magazine that targets an older demographic. Its design felt congested and lacked typographical design. My task was to redesign an issue with the same content, targeted towards a younger drinking demographic.

I focused on introducing vibrant colours with a dynamic design, free of basic grids, to breathe new life into Quench and gain the interest of a younger demographic. This project allowed me to create complex grids, create visual hierarchy, and edit photos in an exciting way. I can take risks as a designer and adapt to modern concepts.

My Chemical Romance 2-Page Spread

This 2-page spread is an article advertising the comeback tour of My Chemical Romance. My objective was to integrate a typographic system whether it was axial, radial or dilatation; in my case I chose to apply axial for the main body text and the typographic art placed over the lead singer’s portrait. Before attempting the final spread, I practiced several typographic systems in one-page spreads.

My Chemical Romance is an emo-rock band, in response I used rustic and scratchy imagery to evoke their rough and deathly sound. I relied on black rules and paragraph indents to give the article shape and contrast. My challenge was trying to find harmony across the two pages. My solution was to carry through the heavy contrast and sharp geometric shapes.

Renaissance History Banner

This renaissance exhibition banner takes a modern collage approach. I thought in terms of icons which represent the time period from the spice trade to the printing press, etc. I was able to create a simple square grid and embellish it with transparencies, iconography, subtractions, and pattern work.
