Funnels are powerful. Right leveraging them will ensure increased conversion.

However, using the right type of content at each stage of the funnel will determine the success of your campaign.

See what Julia McCoy has to say about funnels.

Part 1 - Difference between the marketing and sales funnel.

The nurtured potential customers that exit the marketing funnel enter the sales funnel.

At the end of the marketing funnel, the potential customers are aware of their needs. It is now time for the brand to talk about the product. They are to now seize the opportunity and present their offering as the best solution out in the market.

The sales funnel is powered by a series of marketing activities that create awareness about the product and present it as the best option.

However, when ‘funnels’ are discussed now, the marketing and sales funnel are looked at as one system.

Here’s are the stages of the marketing funnel:
- Awareness
- Interest
- Consideration
- Intent

Stages of the sales funnel:
- Evaluation
- Purchase.

Part 2 - Difference between the marketing funnel and the sales funnel.

Many call the 'funnel' - the ‘marketing and sales funnel’. But, it is important to understand that these are two different funnels. They are integrated to function as one system but still, they are different.

Here’s the difference:

The SALES FUNNEL begins where the MARKETING FUNNEL ends.
In other words, The SALES FUNNEL starts when the MARKETING FUNNEL has done its job.

Marketing is a key function that enables brands to attain visibility as well as a competitive edge. And a ‘marketing funnel’ does just that.

The ‘marketing funnel’ guides the potential prospects through several stages to get them to a point where they feel the need/urge for the brand’s offering. The marketing funnel starts with the prospects’ first interaction with the brand. It presents the brand to diverse audiences and creates awareness around the brand.

The goal here is to convert the prospects that enter into leads and thereafter, nurture these leads and bring them to a place where they are aware of their need (which the brand’s solution can meet).

So, the marketing funnel ends at a point where the nurtured lead is at the brink of making a purchase.

Trying something new can be difficult.

Let's say, you've been writing only blog posts so far, and out of the blue, you can an opportunity to write a landing page.

What can you do?
- Read up. Do your research and learn all that you can about landing pages.
- Look for examples and do a quick analysis of what you can take away for your project.
- Incorporate the takeaways with client inputs.
- Give it a go!

In the process, if you have access to a mentor who can guide you in your writing, client management, and encourage you, nothing like it.

It is ok to be nervous when you start something new. But, seeing it through despite what you feel is what's important.

The next landing page you write will not seem so formidable.

Freelancers must not let go of an opportunity especially when it offers you a chance to expand your repertoire of content writing skills.

A funnel becomes smaller and narrower before reaching the bottom.

Likewise, a marketing and sales funnel also starts with a broad opening and then, becomes narrower as you reach the bottom.

In other words, you may attract plenty of prospects into the funnel, but while journeying down the funnel only a few of the prospects convert to become leads, fewer sieve through to reach the purchase decision, and thereafter fewer than that make it to executing the purchase decision, i.e. making a sale.

Here’s what content can do.

Content can make this narrowing funnel cylindrical. Meaning, content can plug holes in the funnel that causes the number of potential customers to lessen at each stage.

Content can see many potential prospects through to the last stage of the funnel, prepping them to decide in favor of purchasing your offering.

Thus, a content writer needs to pay attention to what stage the prospect is in the marketing and sales funnel and create content accordingly. The right content can reassure and reconfirm the prospects to move closer to the purchase decision.

A content writer, therefore, needs to know about the marketing and sales funnel so as to create high-quality relevant content to ensure that the prospects convert to become trusted customers.

3 things you don't need to be a freelance content writer.

1. A fancy laptop -
Make do with what you have 😊. What you have is all you need!

2. Paid certifications -
Try the free ones or better still, put together a strong portfolio. Let 'your work' speak. It will speak volumes as opposed to a certificate.

3. A website -
If you do have a website 👍. But, you don't actually need one (especially when you are just getting started). Alternatively, put up posts on social platforms - LinkedIn and Instagram. Also, consider creating a page (it's a good alternative to having a website).

How to become a content writer?

1. Like I mentioned in this week's first post - Just start writing.

2. Don't overthink - Can I do this? Everybody else is so much better?
Don't encourage negative thoughts that will make you doubt your capability. Just focus
on 'doing'.

3. Again, read (a lot!)

4. Build a portfolio - Collate a few of your best writing assignments to showcase your
writing ability.

If you are new to freelancing and don't have anything to showcase - Write short articles
or welcome the idea of writing a sample. You could also showcase your personal blog.

5. Price your services - No compromising here! Whether you wish to charge per word
(ppw) or per project (ppp), it's totally fine. Convey the same to the client and request
a percentage advance payment.

Get started!

My second post this week is a mighty declaration to all who keep professing that 'Content is King'.

If you were to observe closely, you will find that content is the fine thread that runs across all the different categories in digital marketing. It's almost like the mortar that binds together all your online marketing efforts.

Content is more than just King, it's the whole Kingdom. But, it must be said, all other elements must work together with content to yield the desired results - it's just like running a kingdom!

You've decided to give freelance content writing a shot!
You've enrolled in a course or perhaps 2, to up your writing skills!
You've watched several videos on freelancing and writing!

All this is great, but the truth is that there are 2 primary things you need to do to kickstart a career in freelance - content writing.

1. Read:
Read content that pertains to the niche that is of interest to you, and also, read content from other niches. Eg: You want to write technical articles on data automation and analytics. So, read content in the purview of the said niche. That's not it! Set aside time to read something totally opposite to the niche of your interest - in this case, read a lifestyle blog.

Why?
It will expose you to myriad writing styles and also will help you present the most complicated of topics in a simple manner.

2. Write:
Don't wait to complete a course or land an internship - just start writing!

Start! Write anything! Even if it's just 100 words. It's fine - just start writing.

Being consistent in reading and writing will prep you for the career that is to follow.

The more you read, the better you write!
