Unpopular opinion: Unicorn marketers still exist, not burnt out, not complaining… just billing smarter. 🦄💻
You know what I’m hearing a lot lately?
“Marketers shouldn’t be expected to do it all.”
And while I do have compassion for that sentiment… the narrative is starting to wear thin.
Because what I’m actually hearing is:
“I’m totally burnt out and overwhelmed.”
And I get it. I really do.
Yes, I call myself a unicorn marketer.
I can wear many hats where, in a bigger agency, a full team would run things.
Do I do as much as a full team? Of course not, time doesn’t allow for that. But what I do love is being able to dabble across the spectrum: social media, email, SEO, brand strategy, all in one week.
That’s the beauty of freelancing. I get to play in different areas of marketing because each client has unique needs.
Now, do most companies need a full team?
Absolutely.
Can they afford one right now?
Let’s be real, not always.
Budgets are tight. Teams are lean. Escpecially right now.
So here’s the win-win:
Freelancers with multi-disciplinary skills can step in, keep brands moving, and stay agile, while companies protect their budgets and still get results.
The secret sauce is honesty and direction.
“Here’s what I can do for you.”
“Here’s what you should keep internal for now.”
“Here’s how we can make it work.”
When budgets open up again (and they always do), you’ll be the first call they make, because you were a resource when times were tough.
That’s what I love about this work: being able to adapt, create, and collaborate in ways that genuinely help businesses and freelancers thrive together.
