Social media for under-16s… should it be banned?

This is a conversation that has sparked a lot of debate recently, and as a Social Media Manager and a Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner, we thought it was important to share our perspectives.

Interestingly, we don’t completely agree on the solution.

But we do agree on one thing:

🤍 Children deserve better.

Perhaps surprisingly, as someone whose business is built around social media, I support greater restrictions for under-16s.

Most businesses think social media success comes down to better content 👀 And whilst content is important…

It’s only part of the picture.

Over the last few months, I’ve been quietly testing and refining a new engagement strategy on my own account and a client account (with full permission).

The aim? To see what happened when we approached engagement differently.

The results have been interesting. Interesting enough that elements of this strategy are now being incorporated into our client engagement work moving forward.

What I can tell you is this… The strategy has very little to do with chasing likes.

And everything to do with understanding:

🤍 Familiarity

Because social media success isn’t just about what you post. It’s about who repeatedly sees your business. It’s about being visible to the right people at the right time.

And it’s about understanding the behaviours that influence whether somebody scrolls past… or remembers you.

That’s where we’ve been focusing our attention 👏

The secret to balancing social media and running a business 👀 … fun fact - I balanced on one high heel for this photo for a LONGGGG time. Anyway…

It’s not spending every spare minute creating content. It’s not replying to messages at 10pm. It’s not constantly checking notifications. And it’s definitely not trying to do absolutely everything yourself.

The businesses I see achieving the best long-term results aren’t necessarily the ones spending the most time online. They’re the ones who find a balance 👏

A balance between visibility and real life.
A balance between consistency and burnout.
A balance between growth and actually enjoying the business they’ve worked so hard to build.

The ones juggling family, finances, clients, staff, marketing, admin and approximately 47 other things before lunchtime 😅

Social media often shows the polished version… The successful business, results, growth and milestones.

But behind almost every successful business is a business owner figuring it out as they go, making sacrifices, learning lessons and continuing to show up even when things feel hard 👏 Because consistency isn’t always confidence.
