Hard skills are great, but it's your soft skills that will help you learn the hard ones and make the best impression when looking for a job (or a client).

Soft skills show who you are and who you can become!

Curiosity is the #1 marketing skill I love to see in new marketers. 🔎

Do you...
❓...look for answers to your questions online?
❓...join communities and network to learn new things?
❓...download guides about anything and everything?
❓...sign up for tools and try them out yourself?

A marketer shouldn't wait for someone to give them an answer or a solution. 🤓 They should love the (re)search itself - not just the ex*****on.

We all love some help from someone more experienced of course!

I'm asking questions in the Women in Tech SEO community on a daily basis and I'm always thankful for having a quick answer. 🙏

But being curious will get you through the door. Especially for us self-taught marketers...

So be curious. All the best marketers are!

Are you looking for your first marketing job? 💼

Have you already sent out a few resumes and cover letters and possibly got that canned "You have an impressive background but we're not going to move forward with your application" response?

I got that same exact email response at least 5 times when I was looking for a job 4 years ago...

What "impressive background"? 🤨

I was fresh out of university, with no marketing-related studies, no work experience whatsoever, and nothing to show except for some free certifications I got online and a 6-month online course I completed.

Are you kidding me? 😒

It can be disheartening... I know...

But in marketing today, experience and passion trumps degrees. And there are so many ways you can get that coveted experience on your own:

💻 Build your own website
✒️ Create a blog and write
🎙️ Start a podcast
📅 Run a couple social media accounts
👔 Volunteer or intern for someone
🤝 Use LinkedIn to network

The above can help you build your experience in web design and development, research, blogging, copyrighting, SEO, social media marketing, public speaking, advertising, and even (sales) outreach.

And most of them cost next to nothing!

If you asked me a year ago, I could have never imagined that... I love being in my comfort zone. It's safe and cozy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But I've been doing a lot in the past year to get out of it, and I've realized 1 important thing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

To get featured in an interview, you simply need to fill out a small form and pitch why they should interview you. IF you get accepted, they give you a deadline, and there is no way out. You have to do the interview... 🤷⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It might be stressful but you need to push your limits a bit if you want to build your dream career.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've used this "technique" a lot...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
◾ I applied for an online MBA without really realizing it will be an actual full year of studies... Look at me now! 💪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
◾ I applied for 2 interviews. One is published online and the other one will be on a print magazine (😱) this spring!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
◾ I applied to become a conference speaker for the first time and got accepted! My presentation is already done, so stay tuned for that one. 👀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Whenever you see something you want, go ahead and that whatever that first small step actually is. ​⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The short answer: No ❌

I was talking with my cousin the other day and he asked me about that.

What would be a good MBA program or Masters in Marketing to complete that would help him get a job in marketing.

I didn't really know how to answer.

I don't believe you need a marketing degree to get a job as a marketer.

I didn't have one. 🙄

And it's no longer a requirement on most job listings online.

📚 However, I do believe education is important.

I'm a big advocate of people going to college and having a higher education diploma. (I'm actually a diploma hoarder 😬🤓 but that has nothing to do with it.)

I studied Electrical & Computer Engineering. I can't work as an engineer. I never practiced. I don't know how.

But studying teaches you so much more than just the subject you're studying.

My studies helped me get where I am.

✔️ I learned how to think.

✔️ I'm comfortable with anything digital.

✔️ I learned how to research.

✔️ I learned how to learn...

Again, I'm not even saying that you can't become a marketer if you don't have a Bachelor in something, anything.

That would be a lie.

I just don't think you should be dismissive of higher education.

If you're still young and thinking of skipping college to make money on social media, don't.

You'll benefit a lot more (and have much more fun🕺) if you do take a few years to study.

There are so many sources online where you can learn SEO, that it can be kind of confusing when you're first starting out.

How do you sort through this information? How can you know it's not a misconception?

Well, sometimes you don't.

You believe something is true and then, with time and experience, you realize it's not.

We've all been there... 😅
