Good morning from Mama Ellie and little Josie 🌅

For a first-time mama, Ellie has done a phenomenal job - babies are strong, healthy, and nearly weaned, all on their own!

Josie seems to think mom is the perfect cushion to sleep on, but she doesn't seem to mind 🤍

Don't let a waiting season become a wasted season ✨

That thing you're waiting on - the promotion, the proposal, the pregnancy - don't let it find you waiting... because life doesn't start when you get everything you want, or even everything you feel you need.

Instead, let it find you LIVING, missing pieces and all - let it find you caught in the middle of a full, vibrant, and abundant life

Don't get me wrong, we love life on the ranch, but we are ITCHING for a new adventure!

Heading to Mexico again in October, but the real question is... can we wait that long?

If you want to make yourself happy, live on your own terms.
If you want to make everybody happy, sell ice cream 🤷‍♀️

Reality is, most people don't even like themselves, so why do we place so much weigh in other people's acceptance/approval at the expense of our own happiness?

Six years of Myles & Soph 🤍

With every year that passes, I don't think I can love you any more than I do today. And every year, you prove me wrong 🤍

Cheers to us, love! I love you today, tomorrow, and every tomorrow after that 🤍

Just your average Saturday Morning on the ranch 🤍

Been working on a new layout for the barn for the last few weeks! These little monkeys should have a new space, and something to climb on other than me, by the end of the weekend, and we plan to start milking mama Ellie next week... Stay tuned!

New month, new quarter, new goals ✨

They may be arbitrary, but I've always been someone who operates well on calendar-tied commitments and cold-turkey changes.

Heading into July, I want to prioritize growth in mindset, physical fitness and nutrition, and time management. I've been eyeing 75 Hard for a couple years, and what better time than now?

For 75 days:
✨ Follow a diet of your choosing, no alcohol
✨ Complete two 45-minute workouts, one of which must be outdoors.
✨ Take a progress picture.
✨ Drink 1 gallon of water.
✨ Read 10 pages of a book (audiobooks not included).

"Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about" - Robin Williams

I have a tattoo on my left arm of a lion and wolf - it gets a lot of compliments, followed by questions about what it means.

The lion and the wolf are the two sides of me - the side you see, and the side you (most) don't.

The lion is the go-getter, the trail-blazer, the people-person, the optimist, the leader, the unstoppable force. Confident, capable, and unswayed. Outwardly, this is the persona I take on, the story I embody... It is an authentic part of me, but it is only half the story.

The lone wolf is the introvert and the critic... craving a chance to take a breath, and asking the questions that expose the gaps that bring self-reflection, re-direction, and growth... It lends to the ability to think outside the box, but also makes it nearly impossible to finding a tribe of like-minded people. It creates both independence and isolation. It is what causes the lion to lose sleep, while simultaneously allowing it to thrive.

What you see, and what you don't see.
The lion, and the lone wolf.

Everything in life is optional - except the consequences of our action or inaction ✨

A finish-line photo from last year's Boulder Sunset Sprint Triathlon 🏊‍♀️🚵‍♀️⛹️‍♀️

And also the last day I swam or rode a bike.

Fast forward to today, and we're back at the res for another race. I registered for today's race in January with the intention of training, but didn't make it a priority.

So this morning, we'll approach the starting line with a bit of unwanted uncertainty, adjust our expectations, give it our all, and (try to) have fun!

Ideal? Nope. Better than sitting on the couch? Absolutely.

A Monday afternoon hike/trail run in Vail after a morning of leadership development with some of the best ✨

Nothing worth having comes easy - but the hard work is MORE than worth it.

Some daily non-negotiables that create success:

1. GET UP EARLY - the most successful people in the world attribute a good deal of their success to being up before the sun, and finished with work by noon

2. GET UNCOMFORTABLE - Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Do something every day that challenges your mental toughness, physical fitness, or social boundaries

3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE - People who inspire you, challenge you, question your defaults, push you to be better, or set a good example

4. LEARN SOMETHING NEW - Be it a new point of view, a better understanding of how the world works, an insight about a relationship or person you care about... The list never ends, and neither should the learning

Your non-negotiables don't need to mirror mine - use them as a starting point, and find something you can commit to, because again, CONSISTENCY is the key.

So be selective with your inner circle. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you, challenge you, and want to see you win. Your inner circle should always be lifting you higher ✨

The TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE - Pt 4 📈

The best advice I've ever been given:

✨ The secret to change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but building the new ✨

In April of 2017, I left my job, a long-time partner, and my entire family in Oregon. I bought a one-way ticket on 5 days notice, packed my entire life into a single suitcase, and landed in Colorado a blank slate aside from the baggage (both literal and figurative) that I brought with me.

The months that followed were without a doubt the hardest months of my life, but they also taught me the most important lessons I've learned to date.

It was in this period of time that I learned to be adaptable, to be a chameleon, to assess and adjust...

And to focus my energy on building.

Learn from the old, build the new... Repeat 🤙

The TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE - Pt 3 📈

There will never be a "right time", only a right mindset - to embrace a new challenge, to make the best of whatever tomorrow brings, to find a way to succeed.

The best time to start is yesterday, second best is now. There is no third best option...

This ones plain and simple - so what are you waiting for?

The TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE - Pt 2 📈

"Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will"

Fear is hurdle #1. And most people never get past this first hurdle.

M and I were talking about this just this morning - almost everyone we know...

1) Has strong opinions that we do "xyz" poorly as a society (ex - public education)
2) Has an idea of how to do it better (ex - if it were up to me, my kids would learn a, b, and c in school)
3) Proceeds to do exactly as they've always done (ex - continue to send their kids to public school without consideration of an alternative)

Why? Because what if I fail. What if it's not that simple. What if I'm wrong.

Reality is, there are no absolutes - no just right or just wrong, no pure success or failure. Life isn't that black and white.

Wins consist of more positives than negatives, you feel like you're moving in the right direction, and you stay the course.

Losses are when the bad outweighs the good, you find yourself off-course, and you adapt, shift, and keep going.

What would you pursue if you knew you couldn't fail?

The TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE - Pt 1 📈

We've all heard this quote:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" - Albert Einstein

But most miss the message. So many of us go through life with a fixed routine, a fixed outlook, fixed opinions and perspectives... when the results we desire, they require CHANGE.

A shift in mindset
A new skill
A better habit
A new routine

The changes don't have to be drastic, but the only way to gain traction is to start. Done, and then done again, will always be better than perfect

Yet so many of us live in a world of perpetual "someday"s... When does someday become today?

Time is the ONE thing you'll never get back... So why do we live like we have all the time in the world?

We're firm believers in the fact that there is no tomorrow that is worth misery today, because tomorrow isn't a guarantee. That's not to say we don't chase bigger and better things for the future, just not at the cost of our health and happiness today.

It hasn't always been this way, and it doesn't happen overnight, but here's what we've learned:

- If your job leaves you drained, uninspired, sleepy, or all of the above - You're in the wrong line of work
- If the weekends fly by, the weeks feel eternal, and you dread Mondays - it's time to make a change

Don't know where to start? Stay tuned...

I stopped saying "I don't have time for that" a long time ago.

Unpopular opinion, but that is such a lame excuse. We aren't victims of our time, we are stewards of it - and whether it is used wisely or wasted is entirely up to us.

On the day this photo was taken, I was three days out from my first half-Ironman. But we were also invited on a once-in-a-lifetime ride with a good friend's family as a "last ride" for his grandpa.

Most people will tell you to choose, because you can't do both. But why not?

Does race prep require a very rigid training schedule? Yep.
Very specific nutritional requirements leading up to race day? Yep.
A structured sleep schedule? Yep.

So I drove my own car, packed a cooler full of meals, and skipped the beers and the late nights. I got to enjoy the trip AND go into race day in the best position possible.

We are masters of excuses. We pluck them out of thin air without thought or shame anytime we want to deflect responsibility for the content of our days or the path we walk along. But what if we didn't...

Sometimes, it's all the little things that make the hard work worth it.

It's being able to go to the gym at 2pm
It's never having to wear a suit
It's being able to afford Chipotle or a latte whenever I want
It's not having to ask permission to take a break or go to the doctor
It's being able to ski on a Monday when it dumps snow in the mountains
It's having a standing tee time with two Vietnam vets on a Tuesday afternoon
It's taking a mental health day when you need one
It's a Thursday brunch date with your husband because you have a quiet day
It's being able to jump on a plane when your family needs you

Don't get me wrong, we're always working toward big things too, but it's the little things every day that really move the needle on our happiness ✨

The triplets are THREE WEEKS OLD 🤯

We took everyone out to pasture to start integrating them into the herd, and brought a few new friends home too! All we need now is another buck and the herd will be ready for the next round of breeding/kidding, but in the meantime, these babes will be an integral part to our regenerative farming efforts!

Last weekend, the ranch to a BEATING. It hailed twice in one day, and left a good portion of the garden with holes in the leaves, or the leaves ripped off entirely. To say I was upset would be an understatement...

But like I've said in previous posts, the ranch is the hardest and the best thing we've ever done, and it will continue to challenge us and teach us every day. Some of those lessons are skills we lack (like milking goats or hatching chicks) - others are harder lessons (like letting go and recovering from something you can't control - like the weather)

Being the control-fiend that I am... This has been a hard lesson. We still don't know the extent of the damage, what will come back and what won't, but whatever the outcome, we'll stay the course

"Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone"

Exemplified and embodied by my Dad for as long as I can remember, this mantra has been so engrained in my life that it was the first tattoo I ever got. In one way or another, I can tie most (if not all) of my wins in life to this lesson and mindset.

Nothing in life will be handed to you.
Nothing worth having comes easily.
Comfort is the enemy of progress.

Stay uncomfortable, friends!

"You must be willing to walk alone - most who start with you won't make it"

What I wish I knew sooner about success - sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes it's lonely, sometimes it's both... And that's okay. Get used to being uncomfortable, because it's the only path that leads somewhere new

You're probably thinking "Sure Soph, wouldn't that be nice"

If you're anything like me, you'd happily trade a couple of hours of entertainment now for a drastically different tomorrow. You're an optimist, a pioneer, and you have no doubt that there is more to your story than the chapter you're in right now (even if you don't know what that "more" looks like just yet...
