When I started photography I was told not to push my ISO as it would introduce noise and ruin the quality of my images. As much as this had merit, I wish I hadn’t listened and just captured the incredible scenes that presented themselves at dusk and dawn. These are often the most dramatic and incredible times and I missed so many by worrying about my ISO. Fortunately my approach has changed, cameras have improved significantly when it comes to low light and even when there is some noise, artificial intelligence is there to save the day.
For me, images capture memories, feelings and stories and hence, even if high ISOs may introduce noise, why should that matter? Surely the story is still worth telling? And now we have technology to enable us to print images that were not print worthy just a couple of years ago.
So, if I have any advice to give, it would be to push your ISO to take the images you love!
This image was taken at ISO 6400. Although my mirrorless camera makes these ISOs reachable with little noise, I would have pushed it even higher if it was necessary to get the shot.
Blue mountains, pink skies, a displaying Kori Bustard and subtle, dusk lighting brings me straight back to the open plains of El Karama in Kenya and I hope it does the same for you.
