THE YEAR OF THE UNDERDOG IF YOU’RE UNDERESTIMATED LISTEN
Pause for a second and look at the scoreboard for this year.
Arsenal lifted the Premier League trophy for the first time in 22 years. The Invincibles era ended in 2004, and an entire generation of fans grew up watching that title slip away every single May until this one. Two decades of being the “almost” team. Done.
The New York Knicks won the NBA Championship for the first time in more than 50 years. Half a century. Patrick Ewing never lifted that trophy. Carmelo Anthony never lifted that trophy. The Knicks finally did.
Lewis Hamilton won his first race in five years, and he did so wearing red. He had not crossed a finish line in first place since 2021. Most of the F1 world had quietly written him off. He switched to Ferrari, the team people said could no longer build a championship car, yet he finally won.
And on the lawn of the White House, Justin Gaethje walked into the cage as a six-to-one underdog against Ilia Topuria, a man who had never been defeated, never been finished, never even been seriously hurt in a real fight. Gaethje finished him. At the White House. With the world watching.
The 2026 World Cup is still rolling as I write you this letter. If a team nobody picked goes the distance, this year gets stamped in history as the year the script flipped.
Stay with me,
These are not random results. They are a pattern. And the pattern is talking to someone.
It is talking to you if you have ever been underestimated. It is talking to you if you have ever been counted out. It is talking to you if you have ever been told you are too late, too slow, too quiet, too foreign, too unproven, too whatever-they-decided. It is talking to you if you have spent years being the “almost” person, the one with potential, the one who is “promising,” the one the room respects but nobody picks first.
It is your turn.
But let me be clear with you. Underdogs do not win because the universe owes them a year. They win because they show up DIFFERENT after years of being overlooked.
Arsenal did not win on vibes. They rebuilt the squad with patience. The Knicks did not win on history. They reshaped the roster and trusted a system long enough for it to compound. Hamilton did not win on legacy. He moved when staying was safer and stayed motivated. Gaethje did not walk in at six-to-one and pray alone. He trained like a man who already knew the answer.
So here is the question I want you to sit with.
If 2026 is the year of the underdog, what is YOUR underdog play?
What is the thing you have been quietly preparing for while the room ignored you? What is the table you were not invited to that you are about to walk into anyway? What is the move everyone will call “out of nowhere”, even though you have been building toward it for years?
Three things to do now. No more.
One. Write down the version of your story where YOU are the underdog who wins. Not the victim. The underdog. The one who was counted out and came back. Read it out loud to yourself once. There is a difference between those two stories, and your nervous system can feel it.
Two. Pick the ONE arena. One business, one relationship, one craft, one opportunity where you have been the “almost” person for too long. Decide that this is the arena where you stop being polite about your ambition.
Three. Build like a man training for a six-to-one fight. Not desperate. Not loud. Just deeply, quietly, daily prepared. Underdogs do not surprise themselves on fight night. They surprise everyone else.
The world is watching upsets right now… Be one of them.
Stay intentional.
