Employees who are suffering from work-related stress can lead to lower productivity, lost workdays, and a higher turnover of staff. As a manager, supervisor, or employer you can help lower workplace stress.

The first step is to act as a positive role model. If you can remain calm in stressful situations, it’s much easier for your employees to follow suit.

1. Consult your employees: Talk to them about the specific factors that make their jobs stressful. Some things such as failing equipment, understaffing, or a lack of supervisor feedback may be relatively straightforward to address. Sharing information with employees can also reduce uncertainty about their jobs.

2. Communicate with your employees one-on-one: Listening attentively face-to-face will make an employee feel heard and understood. This will help lower their stress and yours, even if you’re unable to change the situation. Make them understand why there's a change in their working conditions so that nobody's attitude is adversely affected.

3. Deal with workplace conflicts in a positive way: Respect the dignity of each employee. Establish a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. Try to hear from all parties in a feud between members of your staff.

4. Give workers opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their jobs: Get employee input on work rules, for example. If they’re involved in the process, they’ll be more committed.

5. Avoid unrealistic deadlines: Make sure the workload is suitable to your employees’ abilities and resources.

6. Clarify your expectations: Clearly define employees’ roles, responsibilities, and goals. Make sure management actions are fair and consistent with organizational values.

7. Offer rewards and incentives: Praise work accomplishments verbally and organization-wide. Schedule potentially stressful periods followed by periods of fewer tight deadlines. Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees.

You will end up avoiding, or having less of all the healthy things you should be doing to keep stress in check. Like socializing and getting enough sleep. The good news: there are things you can do to achieve a healthier work-life balance.

1. Don’t over-commit yourself: Avoid scheduling things back-to-back or trying to fit too much into one day. All too often, we underestimate how long things will take.

2. Prioritize tasks: Make a list of tasks you have to do, and tackle them in order of importance. Do the high-priority items first. If you have something particularly unpleasant or stressful to do, get it over with early. The rest of your day will be more pleasant as a result.

3. Break projects into small steps: If a large project seems overwhelming, make a step-by-step plan. Focus on one manageable step at a time, rather than taking on everything at once. Actionable steps makes the goal/task appear more feasible.

4. Delegate responsibility: You don’t have to do it all yourself, whether at home, school, or on the job. If other people can take care of the task, why not let them? Let go of the desire to control or oversee every little step. You’ll be letting go of unnecessary stress in the process.

Adenike 'Nike' Ogunlesi is the founder of Ruff 'n' Tumble, a leading designer, manufacturer and retailer of designer children's clothing in Nigeria.

Adenike started out modestly in 1996 selling the clothes she made from the boot of her car and in bazaars. Today, Ruff 'N' Tumble is an instantly recognisable brand in Nigeria and has a reputation for being one of the top manufacturers of children's clothing throughout West Africa.

Ruff 'N' Tumble successfully caters to the unique fashion sense of today’s youngsters, from new born to age 16, happily mixing indigenous lifestyle trends with an international appeal. This week we celebrate her brilliance and fine sense of industry in a tough terrain like Nigeria's commercial space.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified.

The curfew caused by the protest didn't make the problem any better for the gender suffering these assaults. And with the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th, we are reminded to protect their rights against abuse.

The peace of any woman should never come under any kind of threat. And all of us at Spartan Konsult advocate for the punishment of any found guilty of such inhumane acts.

Williams Uchemba is a Nigerian actor, film producer, model, comedian and TV personality. While he began his career in the early 2000s as a child actor, he has engaged in much more than just acting in Nollywood films.

The actor who hails from Abia State is an graduate of International Relations from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He has also worked with the United Nations where he diligently discharged his responsibilities to young patriotic Nigerians as the Deputy Nigerian Youth Representative at the Youth Assembly.

Williams Uchemba was the brain behind the social media trend.

The talented actor is also popular for his philanthropic activities as well as the business acumen that has made him a well-known entrepreneur. The actor founded the Williams Uchemba Foundation around 2017, a non-profit aimed at taking 1000 kids out of the streets and returning them to school. He has since gone beyond that objective to better the lives of the needy in the society.

Only recently he got engaged to his girlfriend, Brunella Oscar. The excitement on social media was promptly followed by their traditional and White wedding. Cheers to finding a good thing, and there goes our MCM for this week. Williams Uchemba!
