Chester Carlson, a physicist, inventor, and patent attorney, invented xerography (photocopying science) in 1938. He was inspired to create this method because he was suffering from debilitating arthritis and needed a way to replicate large quantities of documents without having to rewrite them by hand. He obtained a patent for his xerography invention, also known as electro photography, in 1942
