We are grateful to the Center Police Department for the invitation to present in this rural Southern Colorado town, that sadly, has been hit hard by fentanyl poisoning and the effects of crimes related to substance use.
During our time there, we spoke with families who were eager to learn more about this crisis and courageous enough to share their personal stories of devastation, loss, and concern for their community.
We sincerely appreciate Police Chief Aragon’s invitation to his community and have an intimate conversation that can help shape awareness and prevention efforts in the area. His care and concern for his community are exemplary. It was deeply touching to witness the way he connects with local youth, knowing them by name and showing genuine commitment to their safety and future.
We also want to extend our sincere thanks to Sarah Hoke with Rocky Mountain HIDTA, who jumped in to participate in this event, as well as our Facing Fentanyl Law Enforcement Advisory Council members Taylor Smith and Dan Bontz, who showed up to support this small community-understanding that that even the most rural communities need life saving awareness. We are grateful to have such dedicated partners who show up without hesitation, offering their time, expertise, and support for their state and for families impacted by the emerging drug crisis.
Thank you to TU CASA for your important work addressing issues within this crisis that are too often left out of the conversation, including human trafficking and domestic violence-related harms. Your commitment helps broaden awareness, deepen understanding, and ensure that impacted individuals and families are not overlooked.
What stood out most was the community’s determination not to stop with one conversation. Their commitment to continued advocacy, education, and action is a powerful step toward addressing fentanyl-related harms and safeguarding their families, youth, and neighbors. We look forward to the continued conversation and thank Chief Aragon and this wonderful community for their hospitality. Many thanks to Marie McColm from The Valley Courier for this beautiful write up including Ashley's story in the month of her angelversary. I am deeply touched by this wonderful mountain towns' attention to saving lives.
