Design & Deen: مكروه — Makruh (Detestable)

This performance will grant you rotten tomatoes and a side eye if you continue in this path so before you perform makruh acts, educate yourself on what they are

Makruh in simple terms means something that is not liked or loved. Something in which the lawgiver asks us not to do but not in a definitive manner.

Makruh is a grey area. Doing something that is not preferred, advised or encouraged…but at the same time you’re not punished for participating in such actions. There is no sin behind it but it is blameworthy. Those who want to be pious and conscience of Allah should do acts that are considered Makruh

Examples of makruh acts in Islam (takes deep breath)
- Swearing
- Slaughtering an animal for food where other animals of its kind can see it
- Talking While taking ablutions for prayer

Examples of Makruh Items in Islam (as my chest tightens slightly)
- food and beverage which are clearly not beneficial for ones bodily needs in the long term (stimulants or depressants)
- consuming substances which do not uplift ones health or mental state (smoking, ingesting medication for recreational purposes)

Theres a grey area in everything and in this case, the grey areas mentioned above are considered distasteful and will get you the side-eye and round table talk with your family elders should you dwell amidst the grey unprovoked.

Design & Deen: حافظ - Hafiz (Protector)

“Al Hafiz” is one of the 99 names of Allah. Meaning the “The Guarding One, The Protector, The One who Preserves what He created.”

A Hafiz is a Muslim who has memorized the Quran or knows it by heart. The literal translation is “memorizer” or Protector.

“Protector” in a sense that should a day occur that our Qurans are lost, destroyed or manipulated in efforts to tamper with the message of sent by Allah…a Hafiz of the Quran can step forward and reinstate the words of Allah back into the Quran, community and in this dunya in its perfect state.

A Hafiz recites the Quran in taraweeh (night prayers in ramadan) from cover to cover. He or she is the preserver of the Quran and all its stories. These individuals are one of the many people who, to this day contribute towards keeping the message of Allah 100% intact since its revealing during Islamic Revolution.

Personal Hot take:

To be a Hafiz is like being an athlete. To preserve the message within oneself, one must revise the Quran on a regularly basis otherwise it will leave you verse by verse. The Quran is a living book. You have to pay a visit from time to time. Just like the saying out of sight out of mind, you don’t look upon its pages you wont remember the message contained in those pages.

Inshallah inshallah ta Allah, before i die, i too hope to one day be a Hafiz. One page at a time. As i embark this journey theres a lot of things i have to let go. A big social circle change, big change of habits, big change of mannerisms. I may be human, i may be a man but i know can do better in order to hone such information in mind and at heart. So being easy with others and being hard on myself is a new precedent i have to abide by in order to one day (insha Allah) carry such a powerful message in heart

Eid Mubarak & Jumma Mubarak to you all

Design & Deen: إمام - Imam (Leader)

Today Im going to start with my personal hot take because wow:

you have NOT felt pressure until you have done such a role. even the easiest of verses found in the Quran can miraculously become the trickiest tongue twisters you'd ever come across should you step up to an Imam's role without mentally and spiritually preparing oneself. every other day you got the deepest bass in your voice, but the first day you take on an imam role? the prepubescent boy you once was pays you a visit! but alhamdulillah the level of blessings that come with such a role can only be quantified the Most Merciful as you are leading the masses in prayer towards Allah.

——

The term “imam” means ‘in the front’ and this person simply leads the prayers—they are no better than the anyone else as everyone is equal in the eyes of Allah. Often, an imam will teach Arabic and they act as the khatib - (the person to preach the Friday sermon).

The Imam should know and understand the Quran, and be able to recite it correctly and beautifully. He recites verses of the Quran during prayer either aloud or silently depending on the prayer, and people follow his movements made when performing Salah. During this service, he stands facing away from the worshipers, towards the Kiblah— which is the direction of Mecca, more specifically the Kaaba (i’ll explain these in detail in the coming posts)

In modern times, the imam is increasingly in a position to educate and reform youth away from radical or extremist viewpoints. The Imam reaches out to youth, to inspire them in peaceful pursuits and teach the correct understanding of Islam. This is in hopes of that they will not fall prey to misguided teachings and resort to violence

Design & Deen: مفتي - M***i (Judge)

A M***i is an islamic jurist qualified to issue a nonbinding opinion on a point of Islamic law. The act of issuing fatwas (formal ruling) is called ifta’. The word originates from the arabic word “M***i” which means “judge” or “scholar”.

This person should have 5 qualities:
1. Good intention
2. To be knowledgeable, forbearing and calm
3. He should have strong grasp of knowledge
4. He should have strong personality and not affected by people’s criticism.
5. He should know the nature of people

These five qualities are a must when issuing fatwas.
A fatwa usually necessitates knowledge of the Qur'an and Hadith (narratives about the Prophet's life and sayings), as well as knowledge of exegesis and accumulated precedents, and may be a statement on some contentious legal issue.

——

Personal Hot take:

These bite-sized knowledge nuggets, especially in fasting month have been nourishing my brain, and gradually alleviating my (for-the-lack-of-a-better-term) spiritual ignorance. notice over the time, my tone in these captions have been gradually changing from casual to formal. reached a point where i have to separate my normal tone to my classroom presentation tone.

I'm not going to lie, talking about Islam is fun, yes, but one has to adjust his posture say things from one's chest as I'm talking about a serious topic. my audience could be a potential revert, a newly revert. a seasoned believer who just did not have the time to learn the actual terminologies and where they apply in Deen. A believer whos regretfully going astray from this path. and lastly a bystander who's just curious to know the ropes of Islam and why everything's so tightly knit together. A personal take to remind myself of the wonders of Islam

More coming soon

Design & Deen: صدقة - sadaqah (charity)

Sadaqah or Sadqah is an islamic term which describes charity.

This act can be segmented into two derivatives
1. Sadaqah
2. Sadaqah Jariyah

What are the Benefits of Giving Sadaqah?

Whilst Sadaqah only qualifies as such if there is no expectation of reward, there are benefits associated with giving Sadaqah in all its forms.

Why is Sadaqah Important in Islam?

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Sadaqah extinguishes sin, just as water extinguishes fire.” (Tirmidhi: 614)

Sadaqah is voluntary charity while sadaqah jariyah is voluntary charity that naturally compounds with time.

Giving the needy fish for example is an act of Sadaqah. You rewarded by Allah by that act of kindness and receive Thawab and Barakah for that act. This is Sadaqah.

Sadaqah Jariyah is teaching the needy how to catch a fish. by educating them on tools & tactics required to fish, You’ve lowered or ended their hunger for not just the needy person but his family and generations to come. Each time this person passes on the skill you’ve taught them out of charity, generosity, compassion or love…your Barakah compounds & your Thawab accumulates. This process can continue even after you die.

This example of sadaqah jahriyah is applicable various spaces for example to planting a fruit, planting a tree, teaching in schools, providing shelter for the needy, healthcare, teaching a positive life changing lesson to the naïve. Its endless

Design & Deen: أمانة - Amanah (Trust) 🔑

Amanah or Amaanah is an islamic term which means trust. It extends itself to other terminology like security, shelter, peace protection and so on. How does one acquire amanah from other is easy: by being honest, displaying integrity and transparency.

Trust is two way street. Trust is the key and the lock. A key to secrets, things of value, and a catalyst to a strong relation between one person to another. A lock to secure, protect and withhold said items of value or reinforce protection between two people.

The lock and key is one factor of verification for trust…the person or people who have access to such things forms the second factor of verification. We all want to entrust ourselves or our belonging to someone trustworthy n not just any bystander who passes you by.

I mean lets take a simple example when you spread news be it good on bad you start with those you’ve being a relationship with. When you need a second opinion on something you’re dealing with, you approach someone who you trust will give you an opinion worth considering. When you intend on touching sensitive topics, you practice this with people you trust who will not broadcast your dealings to the masses (sadly sometimes we come across people who just like things and like to be heard by the masses) but we learn to trust better by approaching trustworthy people

I hope we all leant something from this post. I did. Like for me visually, making the term gold alludes to trust being golden for me. And you the viewer being the key bearer to this this information and gaining to this islamic concept…and no I’m not lying about forgetting to illustrate a key lol. You have it.

To end this off in a deeni way:

في امان الله - Fi Amanillah

“I leave you in the custody of Allah” aka “Goodbye”

Design & Deen: Al Akhirah (The Afterlife)

The afterlife or Al Akhira is an Islamic concept which refers to life after death. When leaving dunya (life on earth) we embark the journey and destination in the akhira.

Akhirah lies in Jahannam (Hell) or Jannah (Heaven) on the basis of the weight of either good or bad deeds in comparison with one another. The judgement doesn’t depend upon the amount of deeds as much it does on the will behind the deed, the niyyah (intention) beforehand. Deeds are judged on the basis of the will behind it.

The constant reminder of death, as extreme as it may sound, reminds you that everything in this life is temporary and there are bigger things awaiting us in Akhirah. Your clothes, your cash, your relationship(s), your books, your knowledge, your social hierarchy, political footing & your habits will be left in this life…but the intentions you had conceptualised as well as the actions you’ve materialised with these things mentioned above, both good and bad will render your destination in the akhirah.

Its important to believe in akhira, as there some people who are unfortunately corrupt mentally or morally who won’t have to answer to anyone in this life…but they will after they die. We do what we can to make the world better, but just know that everyone will answer for their actions.

A random good deed with no pressure for you to action: we must make dua for our people, as some of us are so lost trying to chase this world we forget that the akhira is our home.

This dunya is limited, the akhira is eternal.

Design & Deen: Dunya (Life)

“After all my efforts i put in with my loved one, he/she left me”…

”after all the crime commited the thief still got pardoned for his/her crimes”…

“After living such a reckless life, i took a 180° turn and pursued a clean path”…

”after all my hard, work good intentions and business decisions, i left my wealth and passed on”…

“After all that prayer, forgiving, and spiritual cleansing i committed and unforgivable sin”…

Above are random occurrences which occur in this dunya.

Dunya is an islamic term which refers to “Life”, “This Life” or “present life”. Why this is a worthy mention is in islam is because, all intentions, actions and reactions which occur in this life are not only accounted for in this life, but also contribute to the direction of your destination in the next life.

Having such knowledge at hand, in Islam it is emphasised that in this life we should try our best to prepare for the afterlife…how?

By practicing the way of our prophet (PBUH) which is know as sunnah, and by abiding by the written laws blessed to us by the all mighty. This is known as Fardh—these concept will be expanded on in later posts. For now our focus is on this life and how to navigate safely.

There are many ways in accumulating thawab/sawab in this life by doing good deeds. there are ways to reduce our sins by making zikr, supplication and most importantly developing self discipline.

Like math and accounting, every action we partake in, every intention we conceptualise…good or bad, determines the destination at the end of this this life and as well as the hereafter. I pray that we all have an end that profitable for those we leave behind as well as an end brings us toward eternal peace

Design & Deen: Da’Wah (Invitation)

Da’Wah is an islamic term which means to make an invitation or issuing a summon. It is a term openly used to describe how muslims teach others about the beliefs and practices of the faith of Islam.

In Islam, it is believed that the fate of each person is in Allah's hands, so it is not the responsibility or right of individual Muslims to attempt to "convert" others to the faith. The goal of da'wah, then, is merely to share information, to invite others towards a better understanding of the faith. It is, of course, up to the listener to make his or her own choice.

Some Muslims actively study and engage in da'wah as an ongoing practice, while others choose not to speak openly about their faith unless asked (I’m this kind but as you can see I’m changing to a more outspoke muslim hence the design project lol). Rarely, an over-eager Muslim may argue intensely over religious matters in an attempt to convince others to believe their "Truth." This is a fairly rare occurrence, however. Most non-Muslims find that although Muslims are willing to share information about their faith with anyone interested, they do not force the issue (I’m sure you’ve noticed this with all your muslim friends lol).

Muslims may also engage other Muslims in da'wah, to give advice and guidance on making good choices and living an Islamic lifestyle.

The type of people I find amusing are those who attempt to debunk your faith as a false pretence and their standpoint as true, be it theist, agnostic or atheist. You guys are just cute

I personally believe that we all allowed to believe in our views be it spiritual or material respectfully. With that being said, all the knowledge I’ve shared thus far about mine, You’re invited to share your opinion on them 👍🏾

Design and Deen: Qadr - Fate

Qadr is an islamic concept with refers to fate. Theres your plan and there’s God plan. Sometimes you feel you deserve something or someone but fate denies you that thing or person. Whether it was to protect you from that path or redirect to another path thats knowledge only honed by god.

You cleaning up your mess or stagnating in it are all tests placed before you by Allah to progress in your life path. Personally id like to believe that we are all destined. Whether it’s success or failure its up to us and our strong will to push forward. We destined to taste both of those as success keeps our head high and failure humbles us and helps us reassess our wants and needs in life.

Fate is something we can never run away from. Take from example, no matter how far we travel, how healthy we eat, how careful we live our lives, death must pay a visit and have a meeting. Okay let me use a less serious one—tears. No matter what emotion you expressing, be it joy, sorrow, rage or euphoria, given the circumstance tears can drop by to say hi lol.

Free will and choice is the foundation of Islam. Choice is a matter of faith and if you are forced, it wouldn’t be a choice nor faith. Allah (swt) gave all Humans and Jinn the choice and freedom to choose as you will because your choices in life will demonstrate your faith or disbelief.

Without choice, this life in the Dunya (world) would not serve its purpose. We would not be able to prove our faith to Allah.

Design & Deen: Akhlaq (Morals)

In Islamic theology and philosophy, akhlaq, an Arabic term, is generally used to refer to noble character, morality and ethical conduct. Islam places great emphasis on embodying akhlaq.

To have akhlaq is to be the type of person people tend to trust and value. This can be seen and appreciated in all settings of life. That trusting friend who reminds you of your potential of contributing to those around you instead of being detrimental to those around you and how to go about doing such contributions. A business partner who you trust will have your best interest aligned with his/hers, based on his morality he/she abides by as a person. An elder or wise youth you lean towards for he/she always guides you to your well deserved purpose or atleast helps you from going astray to the best of his or her abilities.

Morality(Akhlaq) & Manners(Adab) are like two hands. morality allows you to ask yourselfs whether your hands need cleansing before handling any situation which require your touch. If yes, morality allows to look inward to accept the fact that they need cleansing…Adab allows you adobt manners as a guide to achieve and maintain clean hands before giving a helping hand to others
