Belizean Talent at Miss Universe 2025
By Jacqueline D. Ifield ()

Miss Universe Belize 2025 Isabella Zabaneh dazzled in the evening gown segment of the 2025 Miss Universe Preliminary Competition. This was mainly thanks to the craftmanship of talented Belizean designer Cesar Funez, who made this beautiful gown for the occasion.

It is amazing how much he has progressed over the years.

I first interviewed Cesar when he was still a student and now he has a luxury fashion brand in his own name. I would be happy to talk to him again, find out more about the gown and share about his journey.

In a public post on his Facebook account about the gown, he wrote, "From Belize to the Universe. 🇧🇿
Honored to have dressed Miss Universe Belize
Bella Zabaneh as she graced the Miss Universe stage in Thailand showcasing beauty, elegance, and the craftsmanship of our Belizean brand.
Forever proud."

It's beautiful!

"Sefe," as he is still affecttionately known, was born in Benque Viejo del Carmen. He was a radio pioneer at Radio Belize, a comedian who featured many props and characters and a journalist who has also been called the "voice of Belize" during his time.

In a video clip shown during the ceremony, broadcaster Rene Villanueva Sr. called Coleman a patriot who contributed to Belize's nation-building. In part Villanueva commented, "Edison Seferino Coleman was a unique character. There cannot be 2 Edison Seferino Coleman. One! And I don't think he has been equalled since his passing because he was unique and he was tailor-made for the era he broadcasted in. I know that he touched the lives of every Belizean in that era because there was only one radio station in Belize. If you wanted to listen to what was happening in Belize you had to listen to Radio Belize. He had a weekly show, "A Return of Seferino" on Wednesday evenings, right. And everybody would wait for "A Return of Seferino". He would introduce himself {saying all the names he used}... Benque Viejo del Carmen. And so when Seferino was on, he had the whole of Belize listening to him. So, his comedian way of presenting things. his unique style outside of the comedy as well, right. Just his unique personality contributed a whole lot in creating the Belizean identity. because he could have brought in the seriousness of building a nation and relate it to the everyday man of how important it is to build this nation that we know and that we love."

May we never forget him.
There is a page dedicated to his memory.

If you are fortunate to have experienced Sefe:
What is your favourite memory of him?
What was your favourite character?

Deanni Laing as Entrepreneur Advocate
By Jacqueline D. Ifield ()

The Proud Belizean News+ Recap #6/9

Deanni Laing, Belize's 79th Queen of the Bay, entered the pageant on an entrepreneurship platform. When coupled with development and female empowerment, she made great waves in this area during her reign. She inspired enprepreneurship among our youths through partnerships with the St. John's College and the Youth Department among others. The donation of jewellry-making kits to the Burrell Boom Methodist Primary School was special to her. She was recognized for her own entrepreneurship during the year and re-committed to re-launching her own business: 5 Minutes with Dee. She explained to me that it is an online talk show.

Deanni Laing Represented Her Cultural Identities With Pride & Love
By Jacqueline D. Ifield ()

The Proud Belizean News+ Recap #4/9

Deanni Laing, Belize's 79th Queen of the Bay, identifies as both Garinagu and Creole (Kriol). She proudly represented both parts of her heritage when she participated in Garifuna Settlement Day (November 19th) and Emancipation Day (August 1st) events during her reign.

I recall sharing a video of her doing the Garifuna punta, but the question is, can she also jump the Kriol sambia? Oops, I forgot to ask.

I'm so proud of her. In Belize, we are multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and, if you believe in race, we are also multi-racial. We should never have to choose.
