Repost Crathes Castle is every inch the classic Scottish tower house – standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within its own glorious gardens.

The Burnett family, who lived in the castle for over 350 years, had roots in the area dating back to 1323 when Robert the Bruce granted them nearby land. Alexander Burnett built the castle in the 16th century, an intricate maze of turrets, towers, oak panels and painted ceilings, many of which survive beautifully to this day.

Inside you’ll find a labyrinth of cultural history, from family portraits to fine antique furniture. The walled garden is a wonderful jungle of history, split into eight sections that encompass every green delight imaginable a sculpted topiary, soft herbaceous colours and modern exotic blooms. The massive yew hedges are thought to have been planted as early as 1702.

Crathes Castle Estate was once part of the Royal Forest of Drum. Today there are a range of waymarked and clearly signposted trails. Look out for wildlife along the way – you may see red squirrels, woodpeckers and herons.

As a conservation charity, we rely on the generous support of visitors, members and donors to help us continue our vital work in protecting Scotland's rich heritage. From coastlines to castles, art to architecture, wildlife to wilderness, we encourage people to connect with the things that make Scotland unique while protecting them for future generations.

Repost Described as one of the best-preserved medieval tower houses surviving in western Scotland, Castle Stalker dates back to 1320, and was designed primarily for strength. it was also used as one of the locations for the movie Highlander, it makes an appearance towards the end of Monty Python and the film Holy Grail also.

In around 1620 Castle Stalker passed into the hands of the Campbells of Airds as a result of a drunken wager by the 7th Stewart Chief, Duncan, in exchange for an eight-oared wherry.
Now if you have no idea what a wherry is, its a type of boat that was traditionally used for carrying cargo or passengers on rivers and canals in England, and is particularly associated with the River Thames and the River Cam. They were also used on the Broadland rivers of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Betting your boat against a Castle, would indicate your sure you'll win or your totally bladdered and losing must dented his ego somewhat

Repost Toytown (Staithes)...

Higgledy piggledy rooftops, of this stunning little fishing village, a real gem in the Crown of the North Yorkshire Coast.

Haven't posted Staithes (or been) in a while. I must remedy that soon. I've promised myself a sunrise shoot here this year and I'm determined that at some point that will happen.

I've just ordered a variable ND filter off the back of one of my lovely followers reccomendendations. Nothing fancy but I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Repost CASTLE SINCLAIR GIRNIGOE

Despite its ruined state, this is one of the best surviving and unchanged examples of a late medieval/early modern fortified complex in Scotland.

The cliff edge castle was built in 1470 by the Sinclair Earls of Caithness and is situated on Noss Head, a few miles north of Wick.

Development of an adjacent fortress followed in the early 17th century, and that castle was then named Sinclair. While it was believed that the two fortresses were separate entities, excavations since revealed the site to only hold one castle with an ‘extension’ — hence Castle Sinclair Girnigoe.

300 years of exposure to the harsh northern Scotland elements, plus vandalism and a lack of maintenance meant that the castle was at serious risk of collapsing into the sea. Funding secured in 2003 and again in 2007 prevented this risk, and today the ruins of this dramatic coastal site are now fully open to the public.

Have you been to this castle? 🏰

Forever at home in Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙

💡 Scotland really is a world of castles and Highland clans
Think of Scotland and you may well imagine a castle perched on the shores of a dramatic loch. You really will find glorious scenes like this at many points in your journey across the Scottish Highlands.

These castles are central to the history of Scotland’s clans, the kinship groups that once organised Highland society. For example, on the road to Skye, you’ll pass the spectacular Eilean Donan, on the banks of Loch Duich, the stronghold of Clan Mackenzie and Clan Macrae.

Further south, in Argyll, check out the ruins of the 15th-century Kilchurn Castle, perhaps one of the most iconic castles in Scotland. It was once home to the Campbells, a particularly powerful Scottish Highland clan.

Repost As the snow begins to fall and the air turns crisp, the Christmas tree stands tall, adorned with the warm, cozy colors of autumn. Its branches glisten with the golden hues of fallen leaves and the deep reds and oranges of changing seasons. The warmth of the fire reflects off the tree's needles, bringing a sense of comfort and joy to the winter landscape. The tree carries the spirit of autumn into the winter, reminding us of the beauty and warmth of the changing seasons.

Repost
As Christmas Day approaches and the days grow shorter, our thoughts turn to the warmth and cheer of the holiday season. And what could be more emblematic of that cheer than the Christmas evergreen tree, a symbol of life and renewal even in the darkest of days? Such is the tree that stands tall to be decorated in our midst, a source of joy and wonder for our family since it was planted by our own hands in the year 2009. As the years have passed, we have tended to this tree with love and care, and it has flourished in turn, growing tall and strong alongside our own family as we have welcomed new members and celebrated the joys of life together. May your own Christmas season be as bright and merry as this tree, a beacon of hope and love in the midst of the cold winter. Wishing you all the best, and a very merry Christmas!
