How To Write An Award-Winning Book On The First Try
When I decided to write my memoir, I knew I had a powerful story to tell—one of healing and resilience from a bunch of abuse I survived in my late teens and early adult years.
My story, it turns out, was pretty compelling, as are so many accounts of healing, survival, and transformation. (Like YOURS.)
But a great story isn't enough to make a great book. The process from a raw manuscript to a finished, award-winning book is a journey in itself, and it boils down to three key steps.
But first, be sure to join me THIS THURSDAY, 8/21, for Write Your Book: The Memoir Masterclass from 12:00 to 1:30 PM CST. (Replay available)
It’s only $125, and space is limited to just 10 writers! Enroll HERE.

Step 1: Write the book
This is where it all begins. You have to put your story on the page. My manuscript was a personal memoir about overcoming sexual trauma I endured as a teen and young adult, and it was the foundation for everything that came next.
No matter your genre, the first step is always the most important: write your heart out and get the words down.
This step was the hardest for me.
Fraught with ALL the feels–I was so scared for my safety and sanity, but I made it through by reminding myself that I ONLY had to write the story for ME at first.
Step 2: Get a good editor
Once your manuscript is complete, a great editor is your secret weapon.
They help ensure your story connects with a wider audience, accurately communicates your emotional journey, and flows beautifully. They also help you feel safe and confident about sharing your very personal story with others.
Editing isn't just about fixing typos; it's about refining your voice and making sure your narrative truly shines.
Step 3: Submit it for an award
This is the part many writers skip.
After your book is published—whether you self-published or went with a traditional publisher—you have to put it out there.
There are countless awards for both independently and traditionally published books.
You might face some criticism, and you might not win the first time, but you have to be resilient and believe in your work. I'm incredibly proud that my book won an award, but it never would have been considered if I hadn't taken the leap and submitted it.
Let’s get your story written—for YOU first, and then for all the other folks who will heal by reading it.
