The 5-Minute Exercise That Generated Thousands in Sales

Ever wonder how Cutco turned college kids into sales pros?

Here's their secret weapon:

The 5-Minute Name Sprint:
• Grab a paper
• Start the timer
• Write every contact you know
• No filtering
• Just write

Sounds simple?
That list became gold.

Brandon used this at his concrete coating company:
• First salesperson closed deals before we spent a dime on ads
• New franchisees still use it today
• Works better than cold outreach

Truth: People need to know you exist.
Nothing hurts more than hearing "I didn't know you did that!"

Contractor Domination — May 27-28. Two days. Seven speakers.

The complete playbook for scaling a contracting business, delivered live on Zoom.

Free.

Here's who's showing up:

Andy Elliott is joining as a special guest speaker. If you know who Andy is, I don't need to explain. If you don't look him up and clear your calendar.

Joel Mercado is covering the mindset piece that nobody wants to talk about but everybody needs to hear.

Lucas Jack Jensen is breaking down how to fill your calendar with Meta ads when most contractors have given up on Facebook entirely.

Aiden Smith is showing painting contractors (and really any contractor) how to charge 40% more and still win the bid. The math works. Most guys just haven't seen it yet.

Kari McLain my wife and SCG's Co-Founder and CMO is covering brand and positioning. Because the way most contractors present themselves online is the exact reason they keep getting price-shopped.

Carter Grooms is handling the part where the deal is won or lost — what to say in the kitchen when the homeowner hits you with "let me think about it."

And I'm tying the whole thing together. The system. The strategy. The growth ceilings that keep contractors stuck and exactly how to break through them.

Oh and ONE lucky contractor who shows up to both days is walking away with the entire SCG system built out for them. Brand. Website. SEO. Local Ads. Coaching... $75,300 worth of foundation and launch. For free.

This is the first time we're running this incredible event. The next one won't be free.

I speak about six hours a day.

Stages. Live events. Podcasts. Zoom calls. Team meetings. YouTube recordings.

And I'm a massive introvert.

Most people don't believe that when I tell them.

But here's what introvert actually means it's not that you're shy or bad at talking.

It's that conversations cost you emotional energy instead of giving it to you.

Every conversation, no matter how much I enjoy it, drains my tank a little.

So how do I speak six hours a day without falling apart?
Five minutes.

Before every stage, every podcast, every live event — I disappear. I find a wall, a window, a quiet corner. I don't talk to anyone. I just reset.

If I do that, I'm fine. If I don't, the anxiety creeps in, the frustration builds, and I stop showing up as my best self.

That's it. That's the whole trick.

It took me 20 years of slow, deliberate work to figure out how to manage this. It wasn't a script or a hack. It was just learning how I'm wired and building a system around it.

Introvert or extrovert it doesn't change whether you can do the thing.

Two piano players can play the same Beethoven piece equally well. One might need five minutes alone first.

Know yourself. Build around it.

A couple years ago Daniel Thayer was putting good people in the wrong seats.

Not because he didn't care about his team. Because he didn't have a system for understanding them.

That changed when he started using DISC assessments through Jason Phillips.

Now before he places anyone in a role, he knows what they're naturally good at, where they'll struggle, and how to support them so they don't burn out or bail.

The result? A $5 million painting company in a small town where he can't just post a job and find a qualified painting estimator walking down the street.

He has to find good people and build the role around them.

DISC gave him the roadmap to do that without guessing.

Here's what hit me in our conversation though: Daniel said the last two years of his life have been focused on one thing becoming a better leader.

Not better at sales.

Not better at marketing.

Better at supporting the people around him.

Because you can't scale what you can't lead.

If you're still putting people in roles based on gut feel and hoping for the best this episode is worth your time.

Leadership Is an Endless Journey

You don't become a leader.

You become a student of leadership.

Simon Sinek said it, and it's stuck with me ever since. There's no rank, no certificate, no finish line. Just an endless pursuit of getting better at understanding people, building teams, and showing up for the ones counting on you.

Even the best leaders in this space will tell you they're still learning.

Surround Yourself with Better People

Are they where you want to be?

If not, that's your problem and your answer.

Daniel Thayer said it straight on EP24 it doesn't matter if it's your best friend or your family. The wrong circle drags you down. The right one pulls you up.

Find better people. Find a coach. Level up your top five.

Finding Talent in Small Towns

You can't post a job listing for a painting estimator in a small town and expect five qualified applicants to show up.

Daniel Thayer figured that out fast.

His approach: find good people, teach them everything, and build the role around them.

That's how you build a team when you're the biggest painting company in town.

Daniel Thayer started Integrity Painting in 2010 with no sprayer, no crew, and no marketing budget.

Just him, knocking doors in nice neighborhoods, asking if anyone needed a door painted.

Before that four years in the Navy. Before that a high school kid who learned to paint for a small company over the summers.

When he got out of the military he tried a few things, went back to painting, and asked his boss for a dollar raise.

Boss said no.

So Daniel went out on his own.

Fast forward to today: Integrity Painting does $5 million a year out of Grand Junction, Colorado.

He's got a team that runs the business without him. He was home all morning with his new baby before hopping on our podcast call and nothing skipped a beat.

That's not luck. That's 15 years of showing up, training people, building systems, and deciding what kind of business he actually wanted.

Most contractors are still waiting for the right moment to start. Daniel just started.

07/05/2026

Most contractors don't have a content problem.

They have a planning problem.

And there's a big difference.

Here's what the planning problem actually looks like in real life:

→ You go dark for 2–3 weeks because you're buried in jobs
→ You feel guilty, scroll your camera roll, and throw up a random photo
→ You type "Another great project! Call us for a free quote"
→ You put the phone down half-satisfied
→ Repeat. Every. Week.

No theme. No consistency. No strategy. Just noise.

And meanwhile the contractor two towns over, maybe not even as skilled as you, maybe charging MORE than you is showing up on Google every single time a homeowner searches for what you do.

Not because he's working harder.

Because he sat down one afternoon, built a plan, and has been executing ever since.

That's the gap. And it's completely closable.

Here's the framework we use with our clients to plan an entire year of content:

✅ Step 1 — Get clear on your specialty. Own your lane. Residential painting. Kitchen remodels. Landscape design. The riches are in the niches, and your content should reflect that.

✅ Step 2 — Assign one theme to each of your 12 months. Interior painting in January. Exterior in April. Deck staining in May. You already know your business's seasons — lock them in.

✅ Step 3 — Use Google's "People Also Ask" section to find your weekly topics. Search your main service and you'll find 10–15 questions homeowners are actively typing into Google right now. That's your free content calendar.

✅ Step 4 — Build your subtopics from what's already ranking on page one. Look at the top articles, study their headings and subheadings, and use that to outline your content. Google already told you what works.

That's your whole year mapped out in a single afternoon.

And here's the part most contractors never realize:

You don't need to create 40 pieces of content from scratch.

You need ONE solid long-form piece per week — a video, a blog post, a podcast episode. Just one. From that single piece you can pull:

📱 Short-form clips for Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts
🖼️ Graphics and quote cards for Facebook and Instagram
✉️ Email newsletter copy
💬 Text posts for LinkedIn and Facebook

That's 40+ individual posts from one hour of focused work.

Not hustle. Leverage.

Consistency doesn't have to mean chaos. It means having a system.

I put the full framework together including a free downloadable 12-Month Content Planner template you can fill in and start using this week.

If you've been winging your content (no judgment — most contractors are), this is the place to start.
