🎙️New Episode Drop!🎙️

This week I wrap up my conversation with Mike Jones, branding expert of Resound, as we uncover the fundamental elements of your authentic brand DNA.

We cover a lot of ground here, buy my biggest insight by far was the realization that in order to build a brand that magnetizes your ideal customer, you have to be bold enough to polarize the customers that aren't a good fit. Saying it sounds obvious, but doing it makes you grit your teeth a bit.

Your brand is your organization's identity. And without a clearly established identity, forging strong relationships with your customers will prove challenging.

Which is why, just as Mike explains, it's important to think of your organization as an individual person. Because in many ways, our clients and customers perceive our organization in that way.

Whether or not they bond with our brand depends on how clearly established the identity is.

How do you bring your brand DNA to life?

According to branding expert Mike Jones, you need to be:
1. Clear
2. Consistent
3. Creative

Being clear is paramount, but if you aren't consistently showing up in a way that grabs attention , then growing your business will be a struggle.

Consistency alone isn't enough. Because you can be consistently confusing and boring. That's not going to move your business forward.

And creativity may dazzle, but you still need a wealth of content required to build an audience.

It's crucial to combine all three to claim your market share.

How important is your brand, really?

In certain contexts, it lowers the risk of losing clients to your sales staff.

I see this often, clients follow the salesperson or account executive because that's where their relationship was. That's who they trusted.

A strong, authentic brand serves to ladder that relationship from a person to a brand.

With a solid, ubiquitous brand identity, your clients are far more likely to see employees of the organization as extensions of the brand, rather than the complete package.

"Reese's doesn't sell directly to me."

When Mike pointed this out, it struck me as so profound.

Depending on the organization or business model, the sales conversations are distinct and separate from the brand and marketing messaging.

Outside of consumer products, where advertising to the end consumer is the given, do you face this challenge? If your decision maker or buyer isn't your ultimate end-user, how do you decide who your marketing and brand speaks to?

I love this question: "So what's going on here?"

It's so basic, yet genius. Since it's obvious that Gina is watching this person, it's such a delightfully simple way to get them to narrate their thought process and motivations.

One of my favorite books on this concept of pattern recognition is Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink."

It's the sense that expertise is found in pattern recognition. And since people are habitual creatures, once you can begin to identify a mental framework or behavioral pattern, you can confidently use that to gain insight and understand a larger group.

This was a surprise to me: not controlling the interview?

From a brand storyteller perspective, controlling the interview is how I mitigate risk. I have to control the interview so I get the best possible story.

As a Consumer Anthropologist, Gina is hoping to discover the why behind the perceptions and decisions consumers make. And therefore, to bring a hypothesis or assumption into that scenario will prevent her from that process of discovery.

I love how Gina explained this part of her work.

As a Consumer Anthropologist, her job is to dig beneath the surface and help companies gain customer insight: understand their motivations, drives, feelings.

It's very similar to my brand storytelling approach. Whether that's helping my clients clarify their message, or drawing the story out of my subjects, I'm responsible for coaching them to introspection and helping them work things out loud.

No one cares about your creative vision. Because it's their story.

I used to endure a lot of heartbreak fighting for my vision, hoping to gain creative control of the project.

What completely changed everything was approaching the situation not to gain creative control, but acting from a place of creative service. When I stopped making it about me and applied myself to truly understand the problem, and then direct every creative ability and decision towards solving that problem, the battle for control evaporated.

I would say "In order to do this, we should do that." And they would say "Ok."

It was the craziest turn of irony. To be given "control" only when you are truly there to serve.
