Almost everyone has heard of Google reviews and many have written Google reviews for a business that they have been to. Recently I’ve noticed that many businesses are getting few if any Google reviews posted about them. This as a marketing business owner leads me to believe that they are not mentioning to their happy customers or clients that they could help them by writing a quick positive review. From a customer though, who is searching for their business on Google, seeing few if any reviews typically will communicate to the customer that this business isn’t the best. You see, social proof is very important in the world today. A new customer wants to see that many other people have had good experiences with your business or product before they want to shop with you. Taking a brief moment to mention Google reviews to your happy customers doesn’t take much and can have a huge impact on your business moving forward. If you are in a customer-facing business, verbally mentioning it can work very well for you. You can also give your customer a small card that tells them exactly how to get the spot on Google that they can write the review. If you are an online business, sending a follow-up email to your customer after purchase with the link that takes them to Google will work wonderfully for you. The best part about this is you can add this to your drip campaign that you are hopefully already running. With that, you don’t even need to remember to send the emails out each time, your email campaign service will automatically handle this for you. To sum this all up, do not overlook the importance of online reviews, especially Google reviews.

2021 I believe we will see a large spike in Synthetic Media. For those who don't know what Synthetic Media is, it covers everything from face-swaps and AI-engineered stock photos to CGI influencers and deep fake videos. Now, this may sound bad but these tools can offer brands safe, cost-effective ways to develop content while remaining mindful of public health restrictions. However, on the flip side, they have the potential to become weapons of misinformation, causing problems for users looking for accurate, authentic content. One major plus for businesses who work worldwide with different countries is the ability to quickly and easily dub these videos into thousands of languages. For those who are familiar with and have used Synthetic Media before, will you be using it more next year or will you stay away from it?

Looking for ways to improve traffic to your website without investing more money in ads? Assuming you're already utilizing your social media platforms to their max 👀 the next step is SEO. Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving and tweaking your website so that your site will show up more frequently on internet searches. Using popular keywords that relate to your business and its location, creating long-form content (blog posts), and updating social media links are all ways to improve SEO. These are all just simple ways that any business owner can improve their website. It can get a lot more technical and advanced as you get more into it, but these are a great starting point.

For those of you that post on social media for your business, how many are guilty of trying to sell your audience in all or most of your posts? Be honest. Yes, it's most of you. This is completely understandable as you want to make the most of each post and maximize your sales. The issue here is you're actually shooting yourself in the foot. When you try to sell too often, your audience sees through it and becomes less and engaged. These continuous posts come across like spam (and we all know how much we hate spam). As a general rule of thumb, only 1 out of every 5 posts should be a "sales" post. If you are posting once a day like I typically recommend, then only one post per week should be directly driving traffic to your store. Don't come across like the sleazy used car salesman!

How are we nearing the end of 2020 and yet STILL so many businesses are not using social media?? I've had 3 meetings just this week with business owners who haven't posted on social media in over 6 months! One hadn't posted in almost 18 months! Yet they can't understand why they aren't getting any new customers for their business. You can be the best business in your market, but if you aren't utilizing these platforms you are going to be passed up by your competitors. It's 2020 where people spend a huge amount of their time scrolling on social media but add in the pandemic and lockdowns, and that number dramatically increases. Many of these businesses have so much potential but they are shooting themselves in the foot because they don't believe the "hype" of social media.

If the popularity of TikTok showed us anything this year, it showed an increase in demand for engaging short-form content. While long-form content has always been extremely popular, it seems as though the attention span of audiences is changing and decreasing. This doesn't mean that you should ditch your long-form content altogether, as some people will still consume it. It just means that all businesses need to be producing engaging short-form content on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Remember also that this also depends on your audience demographics, most specifically age. If your business caters to an older demographic, you may want to spend less time on short-form and more time on long-form. However, if your business caters to a younger demographic, or even caters to a wide range, increase your utilization of these platforms. *Bonus tip, keep your eyes open for new platforms that are emerging in late 2020 and early 2021 👀*

Twitter has stepped back into the big leagues. Definitely a controversial statement as Twitter is still an extremely popular platform for both individuals and businesses, but they have basically had the same features for 5+ years. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it!". True, but in order to stay relevant in a constantly changing social media space, you need to keep evolving. Twitter's newest update adds their version of stories called "fleets". It allows many of the same features as Instagram Stories, but isn't quite as good. Now to be fair, Instagram Stories evolved over time into what it is now, so it will be interesting to see how Twitter adds to it. For those of you that use Twitter as a primary marketing source, this will absolutely be a huge bonus for you. For those who have stayed away from Twitter due to its limited functionality, now might be the time to give it a chance.

Now that you've hopefully been building an email list, it's time to use it! An email newsletter is a great place to start. By sending out a consistent newsletter on a daily or weekend basis, you are keeping your clients or potential clients up to date with everything in your business. While you may doing some similar on social media, those who have signed up for your email list are more likely to convert to paying customers or clients with you. How frequently you should be sending out emails is completely up to you. I like a weekly basis because I am able to fill the email with a week's worth of quality information. Some may prefer to do a daily email that is short and sweet. I caution you to be aware that emailing too frequently can lead to people unsubscribing but the same can be the case for not emailing frequently enough. Gmail even has a new feature that will ask users if they wish to unsubscribe to email lists if they haven't opened the emails in a certain amount of time. Lastly, make sure to provide quality content in each email and come across like you are strictly trying to sell.
