I don't know Maria, although she trains with the same Renzo Gracie PEI place where Sensei Matt MacGrath is like the jack-of-all-grappling. (Our kids and study bjj there).
But that looks like a really slick promo graphic. And "Queen of the Haymakers" is a great nickname.
Island grapplers are doing remarkably well in national competitions for the size of our island. And JudoPEI's Canada Winter Games Training Team is working hard to drop 'em like a sack of potatoes next winter.
As the recently elected chairman of the Oyster Commodity Group, I (Jason Wells) believe some of the provincial oyster marketing efforts ought to go into supporting Island martial artists.
PEI's wild oyster is a performance-enhancing fish. And competitive martial arts are more interesting performances than somebody cooking and saying how great the oyster tastes.
Full disclosure: I also received NRC funding for developing oyster health supplements and has done so in collaboration with some of the Island's leading food scientists. - But everybody's got an angle.
