🫣 When was the last time you were "brave enough to suck at something new"?

Me? Yesterday! 😃

Having started my The Carbon Literacy Project journey with 's CL course waaaay back in June 2022, and completed a CL Train The Trainer course with the incredibly patient and gracious Caroline Harmon this Summer (inspired by a conversation with the inimitable Phil Korbel), I was very excited to attend my first CL Pioneers event in Manchester yesterday.

😬 Starting anything new can be nerve wracking, so it always makes an enormous difference to have the right support, a warm welcome, and a great sense of community. I'm happy to say it was obvious at yesterday's event that this is all available in abundance within the Carbon Literacy community.

🙏 A big thank you to Dave Coleman, Georgina Patel, Helen Filby, Nicole Baldwin, Lucia Simmons and Louise Harling for a very informative and inspiring session.

🙌 Thanks also to Joanna Coombs, Sarah Coppack, and Ned Gatenby of Speak Carbon and Dr Helen Rodgers for sharing your trainer journey stories, hints, and tips.

🤗 An especially MASSIVE thank you to Caroline Harmon and Christiane Startin-Lorent for providing me with incredibly valuable guidance, resources, and support in starting this new adventure. It was an absolute treat meeting you in the realz yesterday!

And watch this space everybody... my very own CL course will be coming soon! 😉

🦟 “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, spend a night with a mosquito.”

Alternatively, just get to know a !

That’s someone who:

✅ has the quiet conviction that all actions (even the small ones) can make a difference

✅ knows that sharing best practice is critical to encouraging change

✅ humbly reminds us of the power we each have to make a positive impact

The campaign by , the Better Business Network, and is celebrating contributions towards positive environmental or social impact: whether by a CEO of a business disrupting their industry or an employee who goes above and beyond their day job to make a difference.

😃 I’m chuffed to have been nominated as a (thank you James Dady and Sophie Lee !), and I’m proud to nominate three incredible women who truly deserve the title too…

🌟 Kirsty Innes - helping organisations evolve an entirely new level of sustainability by discovering their deep-rooted, authentic purpose.

🌟 Maria Soleil - turning traditional marketing on its head and forging a new frontier by empowering communicators to nurture their connection with nature.

🌟 Kate Smith - providing bespoke sustainability-led people development on multiple levels: to leaders, teams, and through carefully curated communities.

💚 And that’s only a very surface-level summary of how these amazing ladies are contributing to a better world… don’t even get me started on their charitable work, or how they never fail to show up for a colleague or friend in need. To say I feel grateful and privileged to know them would be a major understatement!

🤔 If children can find the strength and confidence to talk openly about the climate and demand change, then surely us adults can too?

🗣️ Don't get me wrong - no one's expecting you to take your country to court, but there are MANY powerful ways we can use our voices in business, both as individuals and as business decision-makers.

Here are just a few suggestions to get you started...

✅ Ask All the Stupid Questions

Everyone has to start somewhere. The same applies to climate and sustainability knowledge. So, if there's something on these topics you don't understand, just ask. You might feel stupid at first (I certainly did!), but knowledge is power - the more you know, the less of a fool you'll feel and the more informed action you'll be able to take. If you don't have anyone to ask, my inbox is always open... I'd be more than happy to signpost you to relevant business, and other, resources.

✅ Talk About It

Simply raising the topics of climate mitigation, climate adaptation, and sustainability around the office water cooler (or even better, around the boardroom table!) is a great first move. How is the business going to cope with the associated risks? What might it do to reduce its contributions to the problem - carbon and otherwise? Is anyone at work feeling concerned or even anxious about climate change? How could you take collective action to help?

✅ Change the Menu

Roughly a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food. Could you request more locally sourced and/or planet-based items on the menu at your office canteen? Or simply stock up on your own plant-based snacks?

✅ Move Your Pension

Moving your pension away from anything to do with fossil fuels is one of the most impactful ways to reduce your carbon footprint. In fact, according to Make My Money Matter, greening your pension is 21 times more effective than giving up flying, becoming a vegetarian and changing an energy provider combined. Where is yours invested? Is there anything dirty in the fund? If so, you have every right to ask to move it to a cleaner option.

🔔 Follow me for more... My posts mostly cover communication and copywriting for sustainability, including some of the confusing word-salad people have invented around it. But, every now and then I'll also include things like this - actions anyone in business can take to create a better future for us all.
