🤔 If children can find the strength and confidence to talk openly about the climate and demand change, then surely us adults can too?
🗣️ Don't get me wrong - no one's expecting you to take your country to court, but there are MANY powerful ways we can use our voices in business, both as individuals and as business decision-makers.
Here are just a few suggestions to get you started...
✅ Ask All the Stupid Questions
Everyone has to start somewhere. The same applies to climate and sustainability knowledge. So, if there's something on these topics you don't understand, just ask. You might feel stupid at first (I certainly did!), but knowledge is power - the more you know, the less of a fool you'll feel and the more informed action you'll be able to take. If you don't have anyone to ask, my inbox is always open... I'd be more than happy to signpost you to relevant business, and other, resources.
✅ Talk About It
Simply raising the topics of climate mitigation, climate adaptation, and sustainability around the office water cooler (or even better, around the boardroom table!) is a great first move. How is the business going to cope with the associated risks? What might it do to reduce its contributions to the problem - carbon and otherwise? Is anyone at work feeling concerned or even anxious about climate change? How could you take collective action to help?
✅ Change the Menu
Roughly a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food. Could you request more locally sourced and/or planet-based items on the menu at your office canteen? Or simply stock up on your own plant-based snacks?
✅ Move Your Pension
Moving your pension away from anything to do with fossil fuels is one of the most impactful ways to reduce your carbon footprint. In fact, according to Make My Money Matter, greening your pension is 21 times more effective than giving up flying, becoming a vegetarian and changing an energy provider combined. Where is yours invested? Is there anything dirty in the fund? If so, you have every right to ask to move it to a cleaner option.

But, every now and then I'll also include things like this - actions anyone in business can take to create a better future for us all.
