On Day 15 of BHM we salute
Will "DJ Will" McMillian

DJ will is someone I've watched grow from a childhood peer with aspirations, into a music staple and community leader. As early as 13 Will was dedicating his spare time and money into his music. While many dabbled in music recording/engineering Will was one of the few to fully invest and take his craft seriously. He became one of the first teenage artists of Evergreen, AL to have his own ringtone during the era. During highschool he would go on to host parties, produce many of the local artists and headline multiple proms including his own. Currently he is still hosting parties and engineering artists, and has expanded his skillset to videos, and photography. Will is an influence to many artists/producers of Conecuh County and the surrounding area. DJ will is an example of dedication, self investment, and time he is

Today's highlighted person of interest goes to Dawynrico Monté McCain. He is a leader in the community and an inspiration to those around him who are striving to meet success.

Check out this excerpt about him by the Alabama State Bar:

"Dawynrico McCain joined the Alabama State Bar as Investigator/Paralegal with the Office of General Counsel in February. McCain will assist Assistant General Counsel Mark Moody in the handling of possible disciplinary and civil matters involving members of the Alabama State Bar. He will also serve as staff liaison to the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. McCain is a native of Greensboro and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Stillman College in 2010. Additionally, he holds a Master’s Degree in Justice and Public Safety, and an advanced paralegal certificate from Auburn University at Montgomery.

“We are thrilled to have Dawynrico join our staff,” said Roman Shaul, general counsel for the Alabama State Bar. “He has an exceptional education background with both an undergraduate and master’s degree in the legal field. He also has great experience as a long-time litigation paralegal.”

Prior to his employment in the Office of General Counsel, McCain briefly served as a Paralegal for the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District. He has also worked for several private law firms and corporate in-house legal departments such as Allstate Insurance Corporation, Regions Financial Corporation, and Nathan & Nathan."

On day 5 of BHM we salute Jasmine Twitty.

College of Charleston graduate Jasmine Twitty has been an American associate judge for the Easley, South Carolina municipal court since 2015. She was only 25 at the time making her the youngest to be elected in U.S. History. Even more so, she’s a founding member of LeadHER. LeadHER is a professional development group for women. All of that and she still finds time to volunteer at the Urban League of the Upstate. If that isn’t we’re not sure what is.

On the 4th day of Black History Month we salute Ralph Abernathy

Rev. Ralph Abernathy was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and beyond. As the young pastor of First Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL, he and Martin Luther King, Jr. were among the leaders of the 1955-56 Montgomery Bus Boycott organized in response to the arrest of Rosa Parks.

In 1961, Abernathy's First Baptist Church was the site of the May 21 "siege" where an angry mob of white segregationists surrounded 1,500 people inside the sanctuary.

On May 25, Abernathy was arrested on breach of peace charges after escorting William Sloane Coffin's Connecticut Freedom Ride to the Montgomery Greyhound Bus Terminal, neither the first nor the last instance of civil disobedience in a lifetime of activism.

After Dr. King's assassination on April 4, 1968, Abernathy took up the leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Poor People's Campaign and led the 1968 March on Washington. Ralph Abernathy died in 1990. Another key figure in Black history 💫

On day 2 of BHM we salute Mr. Whitney Young Jr.

“It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared” is just one of many quotes from Whitney Young Jr. As the executive director of the National Urban League, beginning in 1961, Whitney Young Jr. was responsible for overseeing the integration of corporate workplaces. Throughout his 10 years in the position, he expanded the organization from 38 employees to 1,600 employees; and from an annual budget of $325,000 to one of $6,100,000. Whitney Young Jr. brought the organization to the forefront of the American Civil Rights Movement by both greatly expanding its mission and keeping the support of many influential business and political leaders. He has been a tremendous leader in Black history.

On Day 1 of BHM, we salute Ms. Angelita Brooks.

Ms. Angelita Brooks is a graduate of Alabama State University with a B.A. in Social Work and Master's in Early Childhood Education. She is currently a kindergarten teacher in the Atlanta area. She is a very passionate and driven woman, who never allowed the storms of life stop her. For several years she postponed her some of aspirations in order to put her only son Raheen in a position to be successful. In December of 2017 she was able to not only fufill every mother's dream of seeing her son graduate but do it while also being able to walk that stage alongside him. She is an example of never allowing race, gender, nor age define you. Ms. Angelita Brooks is
