Why your back hurts when you sit all day — and what actually helps

Sitting for hours isn’t “normal” for the human body. Here’s what really happens:

The muscles in the lower back and neck stay in a shortened, tense position → they get tired and start to ache
The intervertebral discs are constantly compressed and receive less nutrients and fluid → they lose height and elasticity by the end of the day
Blood flow in the lumbar area slows down → waste products accumulate and mild inflammation appears
The hip flexors (psoas) shorten and pull the pelvis forward → lordosis increases and extra load goes to the lower spine
Result: that familiar dull ache by evening that “magically” disappears after you lie down or walk.

What actually works (evidence-based and takes almost no time):

The 30–40 minute rule
Every 30–40 minutes stand up and walk for 60–90 seconds. This alone reduces disc pressure by ~30 %.
Two micro-exercises you can do at your desk
• Cat-Cow in a chair: 8–10 slow reps
• Seated glute squeeze: tighten the buttocks for 5–6 seconds, 10–15 times
Correct workstation setup (90-90-90)
Feet flat on the floor, knees at 90°, hips at 90–100°, elbows at 90°. Monitor at eye level.
