Part of being a business owner is giving back to your community.

About 2 years ago, I decided to hop onto the advisory committee for CVTC’s graphic design program. Every 6 months, we meet to discuss the program, how the students are doing, how the field is changing, and what they really need to know to be a successful graphic designer no matter the path they choose to take.

I know when I was in college, I would’ve LOVED to talk to designers about what they did and how the “real world” compared to college. What I should expect to get paid. What companies I should maybe avoid. How to even get a job. There were so many questions I had and not a ton of resources I could get answers from.

So when the professors at CVTC asked me to come in and do some portfolio reviews, I was ecstatic! I LOVE seeing what other designers are doing, giving them input to help them grow, and being a little too passionate in telling them they are great and to advocate for themselves because they deserve good wages. Designers are important!

Then about a month ago, I got an email asking me for my address because they wanted to nominate me for a business appreciation award!! What?! Me? I hardly did anything! I just showed up!

At least that’s what I was thinking at the time but too often we cut ourselves short. Showing up is important. Not everyone out there is going to be a fierce advocate for people who may become their competitors but, competition is entirely overrated.

As a business owner, I’m interested in showing up and lifting others up. Whether that be fellow designers, fellow business owners, or just fellow humans.

And last week I had the honor of being handed this Business Appreciation Award at the dinner honoring so many wonderful businesses who are helping out students! It was fun to get out, meet some new people, and just see all the positive things happening in our community even as times seem grim everywhere else.

Finally sharing one of my favorite brand designs from last year! Only a little late to the party on this one 😅

Last fall, I worked alongside Brio Marketing to give Next Stage Rental and Market a chipper, sustainable brand they could hit the ground running with as they started their biz.

Next Stage is working to reduce theater waste in the Twin Cities with reclaimed scenery, props & materials. All about that circular economy! 🙌

As a start-up, Next Stage needed a budget-friendly option to get them started instead of a fully designed out brand. A type mark logo, 3 colors, and a font system are plenty for them to start on their business journey! And, it gives them a solid foundation to build upon as their biz grows and changes.

Brio tackled their brand strategy before I started on the visuals and let me tell you, they did some FANTASTIC groundwork. Seriously. I designed this brand in record time thanks to their thorough work. Always great to collaborate with them!

Next week, I’m presenting on Green Web Design as a part of Startup Chippewa Valley Week!

Even if you’re not in the Chippewa Valley, you are still more than welcome to attend. This event will be held virtually and is 100% FREE!

I’ve done a lot of webinars on this topic, so you might be wondering if this one is any different and the answer is, YES! All of my past webinars have been aimed at designers and developers. That group is still welcome and will still come away learning something, but this webinar is also for small business owners who manage and DIY their own websites.

This webinar leaves all the designer jargon at the door. If you are a small business owner who does everything on your website and wants to make it greener, this webinar is for you!

It doesn’t matter what web design platform you’re using, what your skill level is, or what programs you have access to. You will leave this webinar with a better understanding of what green web design is as well as actionable steps you can take that same day!

Oh, and did I mention that there will be a gift card giveaway to one lucky attendee, courtesy of Startup Chippewa Valley?

Join me on November 17 at 2PM CST for FREE and learn how to take your website to a greener level. Hope to see you there!

Did you know your website has a carbon footprint? Every time we load a website, we use electricity and CO2 is emitted. However, there are ways we can reduce CO2 emissions from the websites we design, making them greener, more accessible, and even boosting their SEO.

I recently finished the Green Graphic Design Course from Little Fox Design and am now a Certified Green Designer!

This course covered everything I wanted to know about how to sustainably design for clients. It covered everything from forestry to paper choices to inks and finishes and so much more! I can now confidently serve my clients with better, more sustainable, and well-informed choices for their projects.

There’s always more to learn about sustainability and design, of course, and I will continue learning, but this course gave me the foundation I needed. And, I’m about to start my second round in the course and go back through everything to soak up even more info!

If you are a designer who cares about the planet and providing sustainable designs for your clients, I can’t recommend this course enough! This is a must-have in your business. And it’s filled with tons of other amazing designers. Highly, highly recommend it.
