You don’t hesitate because you’re unqualified..
You hesitate because you care!

You don’t want to oversimplify.
You don’t want to be misquoted.
You don’t want to sound exactly like everyone else.

So you wait.
You tweak.
You overthink.

You tell yourself you’ll record next week...

Meanwhile, the people who need clarity are left listening to whoever is loudest.

Not the most qualified or the most thoughtful..

Just whoever they can find.

But you don’t need to become louder.

You need to become deliberate.

Creating videos - sharing what you know.

Those videos become an asset that compounds over time.

That’s how authority is built.

B-roll is how your talking-head videos start to feel like you.
And gives you plenty of options in the edit.

Last week was beautifully chaotic.

Several shoots (virtual and in person).
Multiple meetings.
Onboarded a couple new clients.

It was great!
I love weeks like that!

And while I was a bit of a slacker in the “document everything” department...
Not following my own “always be creating” advice -

I realized something pretty great.

Each recording session, production, client shoot...

All followed a system.

Years ago, I’d approach every single project from scratch.

Reinventing the wheel.
Every. Single. Time.

I probably chalked it up to “being a creative” -
not wanting to put anything in a box.

But I’ve realized, It’s not limiting creativity.
It’s giving it a foundation.

Paint is just paint until it’s put onto a canvas.

Systems are the canvas.
Creativity is the paint.

So if you’re feeling intimidated by video content -
where it all just seems overwhelming...

Or if you’re worried your work will get lost in the noise -
looking and sounding like everyone else...

Those are both solvable!

Remove overwhelm with strategy.
Who are you speaking to? Who are you serving?
Create for them. Answer their questions. Solve their problems.

Remove "boring" with YOU.
Don’t just copy what you’ve seen others do.
Show up as yourself - quirks and all.

And at the end of the day,
it’s just some videos on the internet.

It's not that complicated.

Hope this helps!

It’s been a crazy month!!
Started with a traveling project (which was awesome).

Got back, started catching up, feeling good…

Then, bam.
Hospital bed for a week.
Collapsed lung. 0/10, do not recommend.

So now I’m forced to slow down a bit, right when I was gearing up for a lot of exciting things.

This forced slow down, gave me time for reflection.

I’ve realized how quick I am to wear “busy” like a badge.
Hustle culture definitely played a part, but truthfully, I’m just wired that way, often tying my worth to how much I’m doing, how “valuable” I am to others, what I’m accomplishing.

None of that is inherently bad… until it is.
Until it quietly pushes you into unhealthy rhythms.

This downtime’s been a forced gut check…
What matters, what doesn’t, where my energy actually goes.

This isn’t “5 business lessons from the ER”..

Just a human moment.

Sometimes the best growth move isn’t going faster, it’s pressing pause, breathing, and getting clear.

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. Right?

Rarely do I talk to someone about video content and they don’t see the value.

The hang-up is time.

You’re busy.

You’ve got a 12-hour workload crammed into an 8-hour day.

And I’m not here to lecture you on productivity hacks or time management frameworks.

You’re an adult. You choose where your time goes.

But,
If you want to use video to grow your brand or business, I want to show you how to make it significantly simpler and faster.

Problem 1: Video creation takes too long
Solution: Create on-the-go
How: Take 5–10 minutes, talk through a few bullet points to avoid rambling. “Best available” beats “perfect.”

Problem 2: Talking head videos feel stale
Solution: Add b-roll
How: Use the 3-shot story formula:
1) Environment/ Establishing, 2) POV/action, 3) Value (you talking)

Problem 3: Editing takes forever
Solution: Use AI or mobile tools
How: Use apps that auto-cut silences, match b-roll, and trim redundancy.
(Descript, FireCut, Opus Clip..)

It’s not about finding more time.
It’s about using what you already have, more efficiently.

Confession...
I learned 99% of what I know about video production through YouTube…
So I’ve been pretty immersed in this world from the beginning of my video journey.

But… there’s a problem.
I (someone whose career is in video), enjoys the nerdy deep dives and complex breakdowns of a “cinematic lighting technique.”
But you (someone whose career is not in video), likely do not.

So when you sit down to watch a video that could actually help you quickly set up your lighting (so you don’t look like spaghetti-stained Tupperware)…

You don’t care about the history of a Fresnel light or what its CRI rating is.

You just want your videos to look better, without spending a ton of time (or money) to make it happen.

We’re not submitting to Sundance.

We’re trying to create content that you’re proud of, and that connects with your ideal audience.

So you deserve some tips you can actually understand, incorporate, and sustain.

And lighting might be the most significant (and most overlooked) factor in all of video production.

Simple Ways to Use Light for Better Videos
(Emphasis on simple)

1 ) Natural Light
Most basic.
The light should be hitting your face, not your back.
Sit near a window, with the light in front of or beside you. Never behind.

2 ) Key (Main) Light
Level 2.
Same position as your window light, facing your face.
But now we’ve got more control.
Keep it near eye level to avoid weird shadows.

3 ) Key Light + Backlight
Level 3.
Light the background to create separation and help you “pop.”
Just keep the background light dimmer than your main light.

Don’t overcomplicate it.

Just use what you've got, and use it well.
You don’t need a full studio to get...

Better Lighting for Better Videos.

Feel like your videos are a little "blah"?

Shot from the same angle.. and they basically all look the same?

I just submitted the biggest proposal of my career.

It’s almost 3 times larger than my previous ‘biggest’ project submission.

A year ago… (or even a few months ago), this would’ve felt super intimidating.

But this was exciting.

I genuinely enjoyed the process..
diving into the brief, learning about the brand, the audience, the requirements…
and crafting something that felt creatively aligned and strategically sound.

One of my favorite parts was designing a campaign concept where every video could stand alone, but also connect back to a bigger, cohesive narrative.

Each story thread unique, yet tied together by a shared visual motif.

A subtle through-line that lets the content work individually, or stitch together into something greater.

Something that could work across organic and paid channels.

That was a lot of fun.

Yes, others are submitting too.

And I’m sure some have more experience, bigger teams, or more ‘impressive’ portfolios.

But I’m very confident in what I put together.

The ideation, the campaign flow, the shot list, the creative direction, all of it felt like me operating in my zone.

And this time, I’m not attaching my value to the outcome.

Past Evan would’ve obsessed over whether I’d win the job.

Replayed scenarios, and picked apart what I could’ve done better.
Anxious up to the point of finding out if I landed the job - or not.

But not this time.

This time, I’m proud of the work, no matter what happens.

If it’s me, AMAZING!!
Literally the biggest project of my career!

If not, there’s something else coming.
Either way, this feels like a pretty significant shift, in a really good way.

I’ve been offloading some gear I don’t use much anymore.

Making room for a few new additions, and clearing out stuff I’ve since upgraded or replaced.

Yesterday, I sold my first camera.
It was a great little camera.
(Honestly, it was a little tough to part with.)

But ever since I upgraded, it barely got used.

When I met the person buying it, I thought back to when I first bought it..

How I sold my drum kit to pay for it.

How it was the camera I started my business with.

How I learned the craft that’s now my passion and livelihood on that thing.

How many fun projects, great memories, and late nights were captured with it.

I’m guilty of forgetting to slow down and enjoy where my feet are.

And even more guilty of not looking back at the road that got me here.

I’m obnoxiously competitive (mostly with myself), constantly critiquing, improving, chasing the next thing.

But sometimes, what I need most is to just stop...

And appreciate it all.
