"In 1974, my father invited my mother to move to São Paulo looking for a better life, but he planned to only take the two older sons, leaving the other 9 behind. My mom refused to abandon her children and only agreed to move if everyone went together. In 1975 we all moved to São Paulo.
A few years later, in 1978, my father decided to leave my mother for a younger woman, leaving her to care for all the children on her own.
Her work as a house cleaner didn´t provide enough to pay all the bills, and in order to feed us, she used to bring home the leftovers that her bosses were giving her. Knowing that there could not be enough food for all, she always let the kids eat first, eating only if some food was left.
During her life, she made so many sacrifices for us that I will never be able to thank her enough. She was the most incredible woman that I have ever met!"

"On my first day of kindergarten, I was crying a lot and didn't want to stay. Then, my mom decided to stay with me in the class, following me with her eyes until I got adapted to the new environment. Her presence there gave me the courage that I needed. Her caring about me is something that I will never forget."

"It was a rainy day outside and, as usual, I had my umbrella with me. While on a break, I used my umbrella as a sword to play with my friends and it ended up all broken. When my mom picked me up at the end of the day, she had her umbrella, and as I had mine broken, I thought she would yell at me, but instead, she gave me hers and walked by my side, under the rain. It was a simple action, but I will never forget what she did for me."

"The bravest thing my mom has ever done was having fought against her illness for 6 years. She never let cancer or any bad thing that came with it define her life, her actions, or the way she should have been living. She was just there—living, and fighting, and standing for us even when we thought we could lose her, like a powerful rock. And even in those moments when she allowed herself to feel sad and question her femininity because of the loss of her breast, she was a living fortress putting our pieces together when, in fact, we should have been doing that for her. My mom is the strongest and bravest person I have ever known in my life! She is my rock!"

"I will never forget the day when as a kid I forgot to put on my arm floaties before jumping into the pool and started drowning; not because of the drowning itself, but because when my mom saw me, she didn't think twice, she just jumped into the pool in her jeans and sneakers and saved my life.
I had always thought that my mother was some kind of a hero, and that day I got the proof!"
