This week marks 15 years since I started BackFocus Productions. In January, I also marked 30 years in this profession, most of it spent behind the camera. When I started at a TV station in 1996, while still in college, I had no idea I’d still be doing this 30 years later.
Like many cinematographers, I learned a lot by watching how my mentors worked—how they saw the shot, approached the day, and solved problems. But the key is not to imitate, it’s to take what works, adapt it, and make it your own.
I’ve been able to stay successful in this business because of good clients and good crew. Working with clients who value collaboration and creativity—not just the bottom line—makes all the difference. The same goes for the crew. Whether it takes a village or just a couple of people to pull off a job, every person matters. Having a second set of eyes, someone who notices the little things and looks out for the details, is essential.
I’m grateful for the work, the people I’ve worked with, and the lessons learned along the way. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey and doing the kind of work that still challenges and inspires me.
