Yesterday's results from Gold Valley. Nice to get on a few again. Really slow start, but managed a few fish on the pole, mainly skimmers over Advantage Green Bream. Then a late run on the waggler and pellets proved very important with some really big fish up to 18lb! Nice to win - roll on Saturday.

I've been up early this morning tying some hooks for the weekend. As many people know I love fluorocarbon for hook lengths and the new Daiwa Fluorocarbon Hookline is unbelievable! Having used fluorocarbon for many years I have the utmost trust in it.

It's the time of year when the water goes clear and any advantage must be taken! Apart from the pellet waggler, I use it for everything.

Let's hope I get on a few fish at the weekend and put it to good use. Good luck to everyone fishing this weekend, I think they will be shoaled up a bit, but it's warming up so fingers crossed!

Open match today at goldvally, drew the same peg as Wednesday,, had a really slow start again, managed a few on the waggler early, then a few late on the bomb.
Caught well on the pole again midmatch ,skimmers on soft pellets over advantage green bream seemed to do the trick!!!
Managed second in the match, beat by Paul Holland weighing over 90 lb ,I had 79lb
Goodluck to everyone who is fishing tomorrow,I'm at gold on syndicate lake,,silver fish will be important, but carp are what you need !!!!!

Another sold out open on syndicate lake, but with a cold northerly wind it was definitely going to be a hard match,,to be honest I wasn't overly pleased to draw peg 140 as this put me right in the wind !!!
It's a really deep peg , around 7 ft ,and I've won in the winter before from the peg ,so I was confident of a bite or two ,I set up ,bomb , waggler and a silver fish line at 12 m,,at the start I introduced 3 balls of advantage bait's green bream, with a little all round black ,just to darken the mix off ,,started on the bomb on 8 mm pellets,,and first cast had a carp ,20 minutes later another one !!
As far as carp were concerned, that was it ,but I did manage 27 lb of silvers !! mainly on soft pellets!!!
44 lb and a section win was the end result, great days fishing and not to far off as 67lb won the day !!!
Welldone to Charle Dalton on the win !!

Well the good run has definitely come to an end ,,it's that time of year though when the fish shoal up and area's of the lake are very hard !!!
The match was on gold lake ,and alot of the fish are in the middle area ,so drawing peg 3 wasn't ideal,,it's been a hard area for some time ,,I set up my usual silver fish line aswell as bomb ,waggler !!
After two hours no bites and as a few fish were being caught up in the middle of the lake,I feard the worse,to cut a long story short,I had one carp on the bomb !!!
Still a great match , welldone to Ashley on the win again ,he's turning in to some angler!!!!
In hindsight, maybe I should have fished a method for a few fish ,,can't wait to get back out , goodluck to everyone fishing this weekend!!!!!

22/06/2023

I've been in my tackle room today , sorting out a few bits and one thing that I was looking at was my groundbait, and it got me thinking about how important the colour of it is !!!
At this time of year when the water is much clearer and the fish much harder to catch it's of upmost importance to feed your swim correctly, and one very important part of this is to get the colour of your groundbait spot on !!!
What ever your favourite groundbait is ,always carry a small amount of black groundbait as this will allow you to adjust your mix accordingly, always try and use a similar GB so it doesn't spoil the mix .
For alot of my silver fish fishing at this time of year I use either advantage bait's green bream or the sweet fishmeal,as these are proven fish catchers and I have 100 percent confidence in these groundbaits, but I always have some black all-round as this enables me to adjust my mix perfectly!!!
It's so important to remember that feeding correctly is the most important thing ,get it right and couple it with preparation and a bit of luck and you will be hard to beat !!

Just doing a couple of fresh rig's for my match tomorrow,,carpa Gloucester's are my old faithful floats ,, personally,I don't know of a better "go to float"!!!!
No matter what the conditions,no matter what style of fishing or bait ,they just work !!!!!!
These are the hollow top one's with a metal stem, perfect for this time of year when the light at the end of the match can make it tricky to see indications !!!

Yesterday's results from goldvally, very hard day with the water clear and the sun out !!!
Personally,I drew bang opposite peg 3 where I struggled last Wednesday,I fought two f1s and a skimmer for 8 lb .
I was in good company with Paul next to me and neither of us could make anything happen ,let's hope I get a bit nearer the fish at the weekend!!!

Thanks to everyone who attended,Paul Holland putting on a masterclass of F1 fishing and me firing questions at him ,, everyone got to have a go and catch a few !!
Thanks to everyone,,,great day !!!

Fished both days a gold this weekend , Saturday saw me on gold lake peg 41 ,long pole and method was going to be the attack,I did also set a waggler up but felt i was to close to the island,,at the start a caught a few f1s and skimmers on the method, but couldn't line anything up ,a late run on the pole of skimmers saw me weigh 32lb !!!
Ashley next to me fished a great match for second ,,John Radford making no mistakes and winning the match with a great weight of 80lb plus !!!!
Today's match was on syndicate lake and a better draw saw me on peg 124 ,a peg I know well ,I set up a method, bomb, waggler and long pole,I got off to a good start on the method with 6 carp in the first few hours,a late change to the pole saw me catch 4 more carp on soft pellets,,on the method,it was micros with advantage bait's method mix,, really nice day and managed 87lb for the win!!!!
Really enjoying my fishing at the moment,,gold Wednesday and Saturday then off to larford for a golden rod ,,,let's hope the good pegs keep coming!!!!!!

With the temperature dropping I knew the fish had to start moving down the lake towards the clubhouse end,so when I drew peg 57 I wasn't overly concerned even though it isn't a form peg at the moment.
I set up a method and a long pole for up the bank for carp and a waggler, the waggler was 5 grm ,this was to fish corn just off bottom as I've caught on this peg before like this,I started on the method but only had one bite in the first hour,a switch to the waggler and I was getting bite's,small carp and f1s,a late change to the method kept fish comming,50/50 micros and advantage bait's method mix did the trick!!!
Fished light on the waggler,0.14 tournament flurocarbon and a 16 lwg, fishing light is definitely the way at the moment.
Goodluck to everyone who is fishing at the weekend, I'm going to larford for a golden rod qualifier, let's hope the good pegs keep coming!!!!!

Yesterday's golden rod qualifier at larford fished exceptionally hard ,but I think alot of places did ,,,I drew peg 21 on the speci lake ,which is the old peg 54 ,a peg that I've drawn before,,I fed a bream line at 18m and started on the method,,to cut a long story short,I had 5 bite's on the method,no bite's short at all !!!!
I weighed in 10lb 14 Oz which was second on my bank in my zone ,,,with one carp and a few skimmers winning the zone I only really needed one of my bite's to be a carp !!!
With the angler's either side of me fishless I felt I fished a nice match ,it just goes to show how much weather can effect the fishing,,there were a few carp caught up the other end of my lake ,but only one in my zone !!!!!!
I've got a few more golden rod tickets so maybe I'll get another chance!!!!!!

Just putting some new line on the reels , which is a job I don't have to do that often to be honest
As a lot of people know I love to use strong and durable line ,even if I have to use a bigger waggler, feeder or bomb.
This time of year fish are hard enough to hook ,so you definitely don't want to be losing them ,so the correct main line is a must ,for me ,10 lb st for bomb or method and 8 lb hyper sensor for waggler , sound's heavy, but trust me they won't let you down!!!
Very occasionally I'll drop down to 6 lb hyper sensor for the waggler, but only if I want to use a conventional waggler set up !!

22/06/2023

Fished both day's at goldvally this weekend,, Saturdays match was on gold and I drew peg 9 ,a peg I seem to draw regularly,,with a cold wind I knew it was going to be hard ,,it took me over an hour to get a bite ,a small carp was first followed by a good F1 on the method, but no more bites ,late on I had a few skimmers on the pole but could only manage 16 lb ,,,Paul Holland won the match with 47 lb which was a great weight on a hard day !!!!
Today's match on syndicate was always going to be a hard one with a strong northern wind ,,I drew peg 132 on the far bank ,,I started on the method, but I knew I had to catch on the pole to do anygood as the method line is very shallow ,,I fed 4 balls of advantage bait's green bream ,then loose fed maggots,, fishing double red maggot on a 16 to 0.117 tournament flurocarbon I managed a few decent carp ,,up to 14 lb and a single skimmer to weigh in 67 lb for the win !!!
Very enjoyable day ,even if it was bitterly cold ,,it's amazing, with balanced tackle what you can land ,and it's such an advantage to fish light ,,,I definitely have my yellow hydro a work out !!!!

Hybrid or hydro ,that's a question I'm getting asked alot lately and for me it's both !!!!
This may seem strange, but I have my favourites in each ,the one's that work best for me ,that's why I don't use either exclusively, but a mixture depending on what I'm doing.
When it comes to elastic, personal preference and confidence is the most important thing, for instance I love yellow hydro for my silver fish fishing,I just can't fault it in anyway,,but back in the summer black hybrid was my go to carp elastic!!
I think what I'm trying to say is use what works for you ,both are very reliable and work well in the pole .
As a lot of people know I always talk about strength and reliability in my tackle ,both hybrid and hydro give you this in abundance!!!!

22/06/2023

Rig making today ,and I want to mention main line ,,alot of people ask me what main line I use and what breaking strain for different diameter hooklenths.
The first thing I look for in a line for pole rig's is durability,,I have to be able to move my float and shots without damaging the line ,it's so important,,we have all been there, you spend age's making a rig ,move your float and the line is crinkled and you have to start again ,so the correct choice is important.
Knott formation, diameter and suppleness are other key factors to look for !! As far as what diameter for what hooklenths,I keep it simple, for my light hooklenths let's say 0.10 to 0.14 I use 0.16 tournament rig line and for my heavier hooklenths I use 0.22 tournament rig line ,,by using a bigger diameter mainline I have alot more versatility in the rig ,and don't have to make up loads of rig's to many different diameter mainlines.

Sunday's goldvally Christmas match was on syndicate lake,,and considering the weather,it was a great match .
Personally I drew a peg which has been in form 132 , I've won from it lately and so has Paul Holland,,but it was obvious from the start that the fish weren't there ,no linners or fish moving, and to cut a long story short, one carp and two skimmers was all I had to show for my efforts at the end .
A massive welldone to Roger for the win ,he's on a great run of results at the moment,, Wednesday will see me at buryhill lakes , I've got a series starting there after Christmas so this Will be my first practice,it's going cold again so I think it will be hard ,,but I'm looking forward to it as it's a match packed full of good angler's on a good venue, I'll let you know how it goes!!!!

21/06/2023

Well Wednesday didn't happen for me as I had my booster jab Monday and to say I didn't feel great on Tuesday would be an understatement!!so I decided to not go to buryhill,,come Wednesday morning I felt fine ,,,, typical!!!
I Just want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas,,I'll be back on the bank after Christmas, but until then, have a good one !!!!!

Just getting my bait ready for tomorrow's match ,,,just want to mention how I do my dead maggots, there are many ways of doing them , freezing, hot water ect ,but I find it best to leave them in water overnight!!
By doing it like this the maggots keep there colour and freshness, which will ultimately get you more bite's!!!!!

Today's match on syndicate lake saw me on peg 132 ,,,which is a peg I seem to draw alot !!!!! It's amazing to think there's pegs at gold I've never drawn,,but pegs I seem to draw alot .
I had a good start on the method, with 3 carp in the first hour and a half,,,then a switch to the pole saw 3 more carp and 7 skimmers ,all on maggots over advantage bait's green bream,,the wind was very strong and this made feeding maggots difficult,I ended up with 52 lb , which was second in the match and also winning the silvers pool .
Welldone to Tommy for winning with 56 lb ,,I did miss a bite early on the method which did cost me ,,can't believe it wasn't on !!!!!
All good practice for the first rushmoor on Sunday,,,can't wait !!!!!

Open match on syndicate lake today ,and when Angie drew me peg 132 you could have blown me over with a feather!!! Don't get me wrong it's a good peg ,but I've been on it alot and fancied a change !!!!
It's a peg that I do like joking aside, and as long as the other end doesn't dominant, you always have a good chance,,,again I started on the method and an early carp of around 12 pound was a good sign, but no more bites ,the pole line was feed initially with six big balls of advantage bait's green bream with 250 ml of dead maggots and pinkys,,I loose fed maggots from the off .
Changing to the pole after an hour and three quarters saw me hook a carp immediately, two red maggots on an 18 lwg to 0.117 tournament flurocarbon and a 1g Gloucester,, regularly feeding maggots kept odd bite's comming and I finished with 5 carp ,one bream and some big roach ,,,,47 lb was enough to win with the lake fishing quite hard .
Gold lake tomorrow,so I'll definitely be on a different peg !!!! Hope you all have a great new year ,tight lines !!!!!

Yesterday was the first rushmoor at gold with gold lake and syndicate lake both in,I didn't draw 132 ,but close ,peg 138 !!!
It's a peg iv won off before so confidence was high ,I had a really slow start and to be fair my end of the lake was very difficult,,I managed 3 skimmers on the method then a good run of fish on the pole ,at the end I had 27 lb which won the section and the silver fish pool ,,with the series being decided on weight it was a good start ,55 lb won the match ,so a couple of carp would have a big difference!!!

Spent the day yesterday at old buryhill lakes ,iv got a series's comming up on Wednesday's so thought I should have a look !!!
The fishing was quite hard but very interesting ,I opted to concentrate on the feeder as I think this will be the most important tactic ,,I started at 30 m which is a line I know alot of people fish ,,after about 40 minutes I had my first bite which turned out to be a nice skimmer ,,I had around 12 through the day , topped off with a nice tench !!!!
The fish definitely didn't want much bait and maggots were definitely the bait ,I'm back there tomorrow for the first match of the series so I'll let you know how it goes!!!!!

Today was the first match in the series at buryhill and with a dip in temperature it was going to be a tough one ,the draw put me on peg 3 which is a good peg on the front bank ,and in the top section.
With a strong wind blowing right to left I decided on two feeder lines ,one at 30 m and one at 54 m,I also set the pole up at 14 m ,at the start I introduced 750 ml of green bream on the pole line with some dead maggots and pinkys,on the 30 m line I feed 5 small feeder, again with dead maggots and pinkys.
To start the match I fished a small window feeder at 54 m with 3 dead reds on a 16 lwg to 0.128 tournament flurocarbon, second cast I caught a skimmer of around 10 Oz ,to cut a long story short,I alternated between the two feeder lines , feeding dead mags short and a mix of corn, dead maggots and a little chopped worm ,this kept odd bite's comming and I finished with 17 fish for 27.12 ,,this was enough to win the section and the match ,,what a great start to the series!!!!
For the long line I used my 12ft SLR and a tdr distance reel with 0.10 braid ,on the short line it was a 11 ft tournament ,3000 tournament reel and again 0.10 braid .
These rod's and reels make it so easy to fish at distance in windy conditions,,,,,like I say a great start ,next stop gold on Saturday!!!!!

21/06/2023

Here's a great feeder rig that Walter Tamas showed me a few year's ago and I've been using alot ,,it's a great rig for braid direct or when fishing with mono ,as you can see it's a simple rig ,one snap link swivel for the feeder ,then I tie a n'zon swivel and stop bead to the main line or braid ,then tie around 4,5 inches of n'zon power gum to the swivel ,then tie a small Knott in the end ,I use a trimmed of loop ,and your hooklenth can simply be looped over to attach,, there's many reasons I like this rig ,it's obviously simple ,but the power gum gives me added security when fishing light ,,also I don't think you miss many bites as the power gum is always pulling back !!!! Give it a go ,it works for me !!!!

Yesterday was the second round of the rushmoor,I drew peg 115 which I have to admit I was very happy with,it's a peg that I know can produce when the temperature's are low and with a heavy over night frost things looked good.
I had a good start with two carp in the first hour, with the sun out I really fancyed the waggler, and I think this was my downfall,,,,let me explain,,,,,,when the water is clear any extra disturbance can spook the fish ,but when the water is cold ,but the sun is out ,the waggler can be unbelievable, you only need a few cast's to see if the fish are there ,so after two hours I decided to try it ,,8 cast's and no bite's ,so it was back on the method, another go on the waggler an hour later produced no bite's ,so I just sat it out on the method,,in the last 40 minutes I had another two carp ,I really think I could have been second in the match if I hadn't tried the waggler, the added disturbance had definitely spooked some fish ,,,at the end I weighed in 32 lb which won the section,I definitely should have had a couple more fish ,,,but ,,,,,,,,when the waggler works in those conditions it's unbeatable!!!!
A big well done to Stef ,who maid peg 118 count with 87 lb !!! He's well in control of the series, but there's a long way to go !!!!!

21/06/2023

Yesterday was the 3 rd round of the rushmoor and with water temperatures down to below 6 degrees it was going to be a hard one .
The draw saw me on peg 107 which isn't the best at all ,but in these conditions you never know,,,I set up the usual pole , method and bomb ,,it was also a very sunny and still ,which is about the worst conditions possible!!!.
To keep it short I had one bite which was a carp on the bomb which weighed 10 lb ,I just missed out on the section which was won with 15 lb , Micky Howells won the match with 37 lb ,,the series is quite tight now so it's all to play for in the final 3 matches.
I'm off to buryhill Wednesday for the second match in the series,if it stays cold it will be a hard one for sure ,,I'll let you know how it goes!!!!

21/06/2023

Today was the second round of the buryhill series, and a good draw was needed to kick on after a great first match,,,Andy drew me peg 8 which is a peg I've won from before, but you do have some good pegs in ur section so it was going to be hard .
The plan was simple, two feeder lines, one at 39 m and the other at 57 m and a pole line ,at the start I fed the pole and the short feeder line ,then started long with a small window feeder, second cast I had a bite , which was a small skimmer,,a few more followed,,at the end of the match I had 15 skimmers, but I knew the end two pegs had been catching ,in the end it was so close with Andy Ryan winning the section on peg one ,I had 19lb 9 Oz which was second in the section ,which I have to say I was happy with,,,but ,,,a lost fish and one missed bite proved costly!!! ,With no bite's on anything but the long feeder it was a sit and wait day really,,the set up for the long line was a 12 ft SLR, tournament distance reel ,0.12 pulse braid ,and 0.128 tournament flurocarbon hooklenth to a size 16 lwg hook .
Bait wise , advantage bait's green bream ,dead maggots and worm's,,you definitely can't feed alot ,but regular casting with a small window kept bite's comming, welldone to Tommy Hillier for winning the match,,gold the weekend,,let's hope the good pegs keep coming!!!!!!
