“Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

— Roosevelt had just been shot in the chest by a would-be assassin. The bullet passed through his steel eyeglass case and a thick 50-page speech — which slowed it down enough to save his life. Instead of going to the hospital, he insisted on speaking for over 80 minutes.
