Before you pay for a new website, read this.

asked us for a new website this summer. The site looked dated... photos at three different heights, a carousel that jumped every time it rotated, a menu that didn't match their programs anymore. But the WordPress install, the page builder and the registration system families use to sign up were all working fine.

So we redesigned it in place instead of starting over. New header and footer, a new homepage, a five-step Program Pathway, twelve new pages. Same platform, same registrations.

"That's not my number. I haven't had that number in six years."

A client said that while we were looking at his own business on a maps app. Not his website. Just his business, sitting on a platform he had never logged into, telling anyone who looked to call a line that had been disconnected for years.

He didn't put it there. Almost nobody does. Your address and phone get scraped off an old site, or a state registration, or a phone book listing somebody digitized in 2009, and then it spreads on its own because directories feed each other.

Which is why correcting it on Google doesn't stick. You fixed the copy. The source never got touched.

Backlinks are the internet's version of 'word of mouth'.

Every real site that links to yours is telling Google "this one's legit." Ten solid recommendations from respected neighbors beat a thousand from strangers nobody trusts - which is why buying 5,000 spam links does the opposite of what the guy selling them promised. Link-spam isn’t helpful.

It's the least visible part of SEO and one of the most decisive. Nobody sees your backlink profile. Google sees nothing else quite as clearly.

Slow, boring, compounding…. Like most things that work.

A page is not a website.

I know it feels like one. It's got your hours, your photos, your reviews, people can message you (hopefully!). For a lot of businesses it's the only thing they've got.

Here's the problem. You don't own any of it.

You don't own the URL. You don't own the audience. You can't install tracking, you can't control how it shows up in search, and you can't do a thing when the algorithm decides your posts reach 4% (if you're lucky) of your followers instead of 40%.

And when someone searches for what you actually do, Google isn't handing them your page. It's handing them whoever has a real site.

Google shut down the free Business Profile websites in 2024 and took millions of them offline overnight. Everyone using one as their website found out the hard way that renting isn't owning.

Facebook's a great place to be found. It's a bad place to live.

Kept opening a separate site every time I needed to check a page's schema markup, so I finally built myself a Chrome extension that does it in one click instead.

It's called Schema Inspector. Click the icon, it shows you the structured data already on the page - what Google (and now AI search) actually sees when it looks at your site. Free, no account needed, and it only reads the page you're currently on.

I homebrew and sideload a lot of small utility Chrome extensions for myself, made this one public. Schema Inspector. Simple, does one job.

See the schema.org structured data (JSON-LD and microdata) on any page in one click. Free tool from Yellowfin Development available in the Google Chrome Web Store.

Most schema checkers make you copy a URL into a separate site, wait for it to load, then dig through a wall of results to find out what is actually on the page.

Schema Inspector skips that step. Click the icon and it reads the JSON-LD and microdata already sitting in the page you are looking at: what entities are declared, what type each one is, and whether the JSON is even valid. Grouped, readable, and copyable in one click.

It's not a new idea, there are already a few of these. But look at what most of them ask for when you install: full access to every site you visit, all the time. I didn't love that for a tool I'd be running constantly, so I built mine differently.

Mine only asks for "activeTab." It sees the page you're on, only for the second you click the icon. No standing access. Nothing running in the background. Nothing leaves your browser.

Built for anyone who works with SEO or web development day to day - checking your own markup before it ships, auditing a client's site, or just curious what a page is telling Google about itself.

Everything happens locally in your browser. Nothing is collected, stored, or sent anywhere.
