Somebody sold you SEO. The reports look busy. The phone still isn't ringing.

Here's a thing most people never get told: the four types of SEO aren't equal, and doing them in the wrong order is how budgets disappear.

We scanned 230 small business sites last month. 70% had at least one technical problem - the kind where you could write a hundred perfect pages and nobody would ever see them.

Fix the foundation first. Then the listings. Then the content. Links last.

Full guide with a cost and timeline table for each:

We scanned 230 small business sites. 70% had a technical problem draining everything else. Here's what each type of SEO costs, and which one to do first.

"We don't really use the website, it doesn't do anything for us." I hear it all the time from business owners - and most of the time, they're right.

Not because websites don't work. Because nobody built theirs to actually do anything. No marketing, cheap hosting, content that talks about the business instead of to the customer, and zero SEO.

I broke down the seven reasons a website fails to bring in business, and how to figure out which one is yours:

"The website doesn't do anything for us." Here's why that happens, what a working site actually does, and how to tell which one you have.

Every few months someone declares Google dead. Usually on a website they optimized for Google...

Here's the part that doesn't make the headline: ChatGPT crossed a billion monthly users this year - the fastest app in history to get there... and over that same stretch, Google's search traffic and revenue went UP year over year. Up. Not down. (Search ad revenue grew 19% YoY).

AI didn't replace search. It got folded into it. The question changed from "how do I rank" to "how do I rank AND get cited" - and the answer's mostly the same fundamentals it always was.

The road didn't change. They just added a lane.

Despite AI's rapid growth, Google Search keeps gaining traction. Why organic visibility, strong web design, and modern SEO still matter for your business.

The DIY website platforms aren't lying to you exactly... they're just leaving out the good parts.

The monthly fee is real. So is the weekend you'll spend fighting a template, the upsell every time you want a basic feature, the "free" domain that renews at four times the price (surprise), and the day you outgrow it and learn your site can't move anywhere else.

On paper it's cheaper than hiring someone. Then you total up the hours you burned, the add-ons you bought to make it behave, and the customers who bounced because something looked broken... and "cheap" quietly leaves the room. There's a reason only about 10% of new Shopify stores remain active after 90 days.

You're not bad at this. It's just not your job.

The whole ugly math is here:

The DIY platforms make building a site sound simple and cheap. What Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, and Shopify don't tell you before you commit.

"Our website doesn't really do anything for us."

I hear this constantly. And most of the time they're right - just not for the reason they think.

The site isn't broken. It loads. It looks fine. The phone number's on there. So they assume it's a design problem, or that websites just don't work anymore.

It's neither. The site is invisible.

There are no service pages for Google to grab, so when someone searches what they actually do, nothing comes up. No local signals, so they're nowhere in the map pack. No structure for an AI assistant to read and recommend. The site exists - it's just not standing anywhere anyone's looking.

That's the part that gets missed. A site doing nothing because it's badly built and a site doing nothing because nobody can find it look identical from the owner's chair. The phone doesn't ring either way.

But they're two completely different repair jobs. And most people spend money fixing the one that isn't the problem - reskinning a site that was never the issue, when what it needed was to be found.

Invisible isn't broken. It's worse, because it hides in plain sight...

While everyone is arguing over which AI-powered framework (which will be vaporware in a year - likely faster than you can say "crypto"), currently being peddled by the noise merchants is going to be the one that dethrones WordPress (which, for the record, runs nearly 50% of the entire internet) - th

Search engines stealing your traffic.

Search engines spent years sending you traffic. Now they scrape your content, feed it to their AI, and answer the question right there in the results - so nobody clicks through to you anymore.

Then they sell you ads to win back the visitors you used to get for free.

You wrote the content. You did the work. And now you're renting back your own audience...

This is the part of "the future of search" nobody put in the brochure. There's still a way to stay visible in it - it just isn't the game you were playing five years ago.

Full breakdown here -

Search engines now scrape content from your site, train their AI models on it, and show it right in the results, so users never click through to you.

Quick one. Do you know where your website's contact form actually sends its messages?

Be sure. I've lost count of the businesses running ads, driving traffic, getting form fills... that land in an inbox nobody's opened since 2022. Or worse, nowhere at all - the form "submits," says thanks, and quietly drops the message into the void. Never to be seen again!

You don't find out until a customer calls, annoyed, asking why you ghosted the message they sent three weeks ago.

Go send yourself a test message. Right now. I'll wait.

You've walked past a storefront that just felt... off.

Dusty window, flickering sign, hours taped to the door in faded Sharpie. You didn't go in. Couldn't have told me why - you just kept walking. (Could've had great coffee in there. We'll never know.)

Here's the thing though - you've got one of those too. It's just online.

Your website makes the same first impression, only faster. People decide in about two seconds whether you look like a real, current, trustworthy business. Slow load, dated design, a copyright date proudly stuck in 2021, a Google listing still showing hours from two summers ago... and they're gone before they read a word. Same as you and that coffee shop.

And you can't see it. You 'walk' past your own site every day, so it looks normal to you. The customer sees it cold - first time, zero patience, no reason to give you the benefit of the doubt.

You never found out what you missed at that coffee shop. Your customers won't tell you either.

They'll just keep walking.

When design feels off, visitors notice. Learn how visual balance, spacing, and trust-driven design make your website feel right and build credibility.

A client forwarded me a $15,000 marketing proposal and asked me to poke holes in it.

So I did.

The report was wall-to-wall green numbers - 135,000 impressions, a 10.55% click-through rate, conversions everywhere. Looked great on a Monday morning.

Then I looked closer. The single best-performing keyword in the whole account was the company's own name - people typing the brand into Google because they already knew it... and the agency was billing that back as new business.

Anyone can buy a click. The hard part is what happens after someone clicks - and that was the exact part nobody was touching.

I wrote up the whole teardown: the .1% CTR they guaranteed "in writing," the walled-garden trap that leaves you with nothing the day you cancel, and the one question worth asking anyone who runs your ads.

A client forwarded me a marketing proposal a while back and asked me to poke holes in it. This happens more than you'd think.
