When I was in college, FYI, in 1973-75, during the age of the dinosaurs, as I tell my students....we learned to use a Heidelberg Whip machine. I am so glad the Museum of Printing is a fabulous resource for history.

In this photo we see renowned letterpress printer Alanah Nelson teaching Museum of Printing volunteer Chris Bradford how to run our venerable Heidelberg Windmill letterpress.

Join the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) for a free community open house commemorating 250 years since Boston printer and patriot Isaiah Thomas brought his printing press and newspaper, The Massachusetts Spy, to Worcester—a move that helped shape the American Revolution. That original eighteenth-century press, which Thomas named “No. 1,” is housed at AAS, the national research library of American history he founded in 1812. During the open house, visitors of all ages will be able to view “No. 1” and learn about its remarkable history, as well as try their hand at operating a full-size, exact replica of the press. Other activities include guided behind-the-scenes tours showing how AAS stores and preserves its vast collections of original printed materials from before 1900; exploring and touching a variety of early American publications, and more. Complimentary refreshments will be available. More information can be found at americanantiquarian.org. Follow them here:

Get inspired by The Big Little Book from the Romano Library!

Launched in 1932 by Whitman Publishing, this series proved that big stories could come in small packages—literally! By adapting content from comics, movies, and radio, they delivered engaging narratives to young readers in a compact, cost-effective format (just 3⅝" x 4½").

During the Great Depression, this creative approach made publishing more affordable while keeping young minds entertained. A great reminder that innovation + smart design = maximum impact with minimal costs!

I actually declined designing the logo for this event. It seemed like it was getting way too political. I had offered to donate my time. But the contact who called wanted a bid.

There are some things that do not work for me here. First of all the bridge. Images I have seen of bridges in the 1700s did not have cross bars. They were more vertical and horizontal boards. The typeface is not from the 1700s is from the transitional period of type. Typefaces from the 1700s were characterized by more upright letters, straighter crossbars, and greater contrast between thick and thin strokes. I am uncertain what the objects around the circle are. They just look too polished for the time period. I just wish more historic research went into things like this. A simple typographic solution with a taste or hint of an object like what concord did would have been lovely.

So I got a message that for some reason my business page you are looking at is going to be removed. I am not sure why and there have been no specifics as to why. I wrote Meta for clarification.

Ok dear clients. Tarrifs will mean higher paper prices on your projects. I am reminded of a time we had to order paper six months ahead of a print run due to tariffs, prices and Covid. Let’s stay in touch with our printers to see how tariffs with Canada on day one will impact things. Fingers crossed it won’t be the same.
